A lot harder to start as a journeymen i started as a 4th year and took a pay cut to get my foot in the door, it's hard to pay a guy journeymen wages to ride around in the passenger seat for a couple years.

Think what you want. Our company just released an incentive plan where some people on nights are making $2000 every 14 days as a bonus on top of their earnings.

nice, see lots of places having to put out signing bonuses, top up bonuses, 3+ pr hr for night shifts. getting hard to find guys.
my welders start at 30 and go to 35 +3 phr bay leader premium, after 3months. took 3 weeks just to get 3 decent applications and then only 1of them didn't laugh at us when we offered the wage.
i pay my j man hd techs 37 phr + 3 phr bay leader, and i supply all required tools, and it is hard to get guys, was looking for apprentices finally hired 2 guys out of ontario because nobody wanted to work out here. 1st years no tools, no exp, applying then saying well i need at least 27 to start.
maybe i am just that much of an azzhole and the word has got out
lol

I do and dont get me wrong the world needs millrights, someone has to fix the conveyor, and change the light bulbs in the pop machine.......... The world also needs 19 year hot chics with daddy issues to fill strip clubs.... takes all sorts!! I perfer something a little more challenging!! Take it back to a multispeed gearbox, the millright takes it out of the machine, then give it to the grown-up (mechanic) to get fixed then puts it back in.

Your a douche yah know nothing about millwrighting!! I work on /overhaul steam turbines, nat gas engines, all types of compressors, pumps, gearboxes, plus machine parts in the machine shop, troubleshoot plant process issues, commission new equipment. Plus I work on the mobile equipment on plant site. Laser align equipment, machinery installs, 95% of my work is indoors as well.
Come on man you really want that double standard!! Well than here it is, the other mechanic in the plant is a hd mech and he just doesn't get it.
A operator in the control room asked the other day what the difference in the two trades were ,and the pipefitter piped up and said a millwright knows what "thousands of a inch" are. I said a HD mech works on his equipment like its "pig iron", a millwright treats his equipment like its a "grand piano".

Flatlander_01- the main thing im confused about is the gas compression field, if you had your hd mech ticket and got tired of working on trucks/off road equipment, could you get a job in gas compression?

Yes, but Millwright is a much better trade IMO most plants want a millwright as a employee not a hd mech. There are engines on site recip/screw/centrif compressors, and best of all you can go to work in the field as well.
Gas drive will hire millwrights, hvac companies will hire millwrights. Millwrights get into vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis. Robotics, PLCs, balancing.
I'd much rather work on a v16 engine inside at -20 than working on a broke down piece of forestry equipment in the middle of a cut block.
Been there done that!

lmfao, this is why you you get put in your spot!!!!
I take it that was directed at me, so
the guy asked a simple question on the trade difference and your keyboard spilled biased misinformed posts one after another.
It's quite obvious you know very little about the oil and gas business, you put yourself on the spot and didn't realize it.

I happen to be a well accomplished and highly trained HD Mechanic and have been for 35 years. I'd put my skills and knowledge in the trade up against anyone anytime. Your comments are offensive!

I apologize for offending you, but I came up with that phrase from hd mechs that work on our field compression.
At my site I get the opportunity to go and do some overhauls with them in the field, I constantly hear them say "its pig iron not a grand piano" and these guys have been twisting wrenches ALOT longer than me, and are very skilled mech that I have learned alot from them.
When they come to the plant and help me with a steam turbine, sometimes I have to keep their "grab a bigger hammer" attitude in check.
I have no idea what type of hd mech you are, but the guys I worked with had dirt, and mining backgrounds.
I wasn't going to get in on this thread because there was a lot of good info for the original poster to use, but someone was portraying millwrights in a way that offended me.
I love doing what I do I'm glad I chose the trade I did, it treats me good and provides for my family.

Not Sure
Never met a mechanic who enjoys wiring. Tedious work.

Working on 20,000HP three channel MV liquid drives is tedious work! Don't think any mechanics will be poking around in one of those.
Keep on pullin your wrenches, it doesn't suit your aptitude. I think the OP asked what was the difference between millwright and HD mechanic

IMO millwright has a long and prosperous carreer with many avenues of specilization that can be done long after the body can't handle the HD trade anymore. Also our top machiney specialists, the guys that work on what is being driven by those 20,000 hp drives have both millwright and HD mechanic licences.
