Guy survives massive avalanche video

VIDEO*

It's that time of year when we are all super excited to get out and ride. Before you go, check the Avalanche Report and Weather Forecast and plan accordingly. Make sure everyone in your group has some avalanche safety training, current 3 or 4 antennae tranceivers, shovels and probes. Don't forget your tranceiver checks before you leave the parking lot and practice rescue scenarios to stay fresh! This way everyone comes home safe at the end of the day. I wear my Snowpulse Pack everyday...just a little added life insurance....I should NEVER have to pull the trigger though.

I was trying to see where he pulls his airbag...super lucky skier. Don't ever make decisions based on the fact that you're wearing an AFD.

Looks like an abs commercial... Almost gives the wrong message saying that when your wearing an avy bag you can drop in on anything..I to wear a snow pulse bag, but I'd like to think I make the right decisions not to put myself in that situation

many in the ski community gave abs thumbs down for using it as an ad when it came out a while ago.

Avalanche Flotation Devices won't make a person smarter but they might save a life if they or someone else make a mistake. You shouldn't ever have to pull the trigger but people inherently make mistakes.

The reason I posted this video was to remind people of the danger of avalanches in the terrain we ride in. I would like to see every rider have some some level of education, have the gear I mentioned above and know how to use it!

Have fun and ride safe!

Re: Guy survives massive avalanche video

The company that was shooting this commercial for Ford, made it for ABS after they witnessed this from the Heli while creating the ad. The guy is a pro skier and choose that easier line after a big dump of snow, also a shop owner provided him with a bag when they heard he was heading out that week! It is easy to judge and use this as a negative as say air bags make some do stupid things, but that myth has been proved wrong with seatbelts, helmets etc. to me this shows the biggest risk to humans in the mountains is the unwillingness to say no not today or be rushed by something, the filming of an ad in this case, maybe not even by the company but more in the athletes head , like he has to make this work!
The lesson is use this to arm yourself with knowledge, and be willing to say no not today even if there are tracks and never be in a hurry, sometimes now with the power of new machines we want to get to a spot instead of enjoying the place you might get to that day because of conditions, it is great to push but knowing when to back off is a much bigger skill and will keep u alive longer in anything! Play safe and have fun, the snow in the interior is sick right now, day 5 at Grizzly Lodge!!

Re: Guy survives massive avalanche video

Thanks for the posting Chris. Interesting video on many levels, even just watching how the avy initiates.

But I completely agree, avy packs are like seatbelts - NEVER drive/ride to force them to do their life-saving work!!! Lessons from the Titanic - if several bad decisions in a row force someone to use his/her last layer of safety equipment, they need to rethink their decision making if they survive...

You just know he screamed in his head like homer simpson at some point! But seriously that is scary stuff! I wear a snow pulse but I try really hard to avoid getting anywhere near stuff like that. Even if it means not shredding a pristine un touched face on a awesome blue bird day!!
OH and also check your cylinder if you wear a AFD, i forgot to last trip and realized it was empty shortly before heading up the trail.(I'm am now gonna buy a spare cylinder) I sure would look stupid wearing a not discharged bag with a empty cylinder I guess if they had to dig me out of a slide.

If you have an empty cylinder in a Snowpulse then call your supplier. There was a recall on cylinders as some leaked because of a bad seal. They will exchange you to a updated one for free.
