This turned out to become an interesting thread, thanks for all imput, I have cleaned my valve up with brake clean and a little bit of scraping but my valves looked like they were covered with mollasses as well with a little bit of hard carbon under the sludge, for you artic cat boys you should check your cable measurement for the powervalve as I have heard a lot of them are out, it is good to inspect your cables for fraying as well while you are at it.

What exactly do you mean by bad? I bought my sled last season and they did the valve upon purchase, when I got the sled home I drained all the oil cause I didn't know what was in it, and had been running poo syn all last season, took the valves apart recently and holy oil gum, looked like molasses. Wondering if I should change oil?

Molasses is right with hard blackened carbon underneath - I gotta say this thread is an eyeopener as I have always considered Shell Advance Oil to be a bit like the premium brand dog food you buy at Walmart - riding on the premium name but no where near as good as the high end brands.

Good to know - might give a try this winter.

very interesting thread the only thing I would add is I would be careful when considering oil. there is alot more to consider than clean power valves. I would rather clean valves once a year than rebuild my engine.

Good Info Scotty......is the Shell oil the exact same as AC APV pure syn.?

Snotty... Yes... Cats syn has always been Shell... since 2000, unless they have struck a new deal with a new supplier lately, which I doubt. Pure Synthetic you ask?? Have to go read the Jug in the garage. I'm guessing that shell advance and Cats rebranded offering (the same) is not pure syn? Is It? Homework to be done... let me know if I don't let you know first. :)

Here ya go... reading right off the jug... "Advance Snow Ultra is a fully synthetic low ash snowmobile oil designed for use in snowmobile engines..." blah, blah blah.

So yes, Shell's synthetic is not only pure syn just like Cats, but it is the same as cats cause Cat's is Shell. :)

I'm guessin you already new this though?

Does the jug actually say Advanced Snow Ultra??

LOL... Yes, the jug says "Advance Snow Ultra" ..."High performance Synthetic Oil" and no I've yet to see the "Fresh Scent" Lable :d:d

Shell also has an "Advance" 2 stroke oil that is purely petroleum based, not good for exhuast valves...

What syn / petroleum blend r u talking about ?

If the "Advance" you are talking about is the blue oil, it is fine for exhaust valves, it does not gum them up.

In my head
Shell Advance Synthetic is more of a Tan colour. Does not smell too bad when burnt.

I really like the chaincase oil and low temp grease as well. Also at C-Tire. I save up my C-Tire bucks all year and buy the chaincase oil and grease with them.

I've attached Shells datasheet for the product.

There is a Shell Advance (blue oil) and the Shell Advance Ultra (tan). I think that Scotty was referring to the blue one (Advance) when he discussed the petroleum based oil. The Ultra is a great oil, virtually no smoke off it.

what to use when cleaning power valves never don it ....:beer::beer:

I've always used brake cleaner and a little wire brush or steel wool, works alright, if you can get a small enough wire brush you can stick it in the power valve slots and get some of the crap that build up on the ends out.

I have always used Shell ultra synthetic and have had the power valves stick once at about 1000kms, but that was when my M7 was new and was using 23:1 oil to gas. I turned it down to 40:1 and clean them at the begginning of each season and have never had a problem.

For cat guys its also a good idea to check the cable length at the servo motor, these cables stretch over time and will start to not open due to stretched cables.

Yip... thats about right. Now if Shell named the Synthetic anything but "Advance" it would save alot of confusion :)

Modman, Your saying that the blue petroleum lube has never caused you any issues with sticktion or build up over the years? thats good. Ever since I have owned an APV sled I have only run the synthetic. So far really pleased with the results. Just costs alot more.

ZRrrr... I use the synthetic gear / chaincase oil from crappy tire as well, even in the diffs on my quad.

LOL! Yeah, I don't know why they named them the same, probably just cheaper to make stickers with a few more letters!! LOL.

I have to apologize, you aren't really getting the whole story from me. I premix so I can change my oil % with each tank of fuel, if I'm seeing too much residue on the plugs/piston domes, I can just cut it back slightly on the next jerry can to compensate.

Never had any issues with the blue Advance, like I said, the Ultra is a great oil. Fortunately for me, my uncle is a avid sledder and is a Shell distributor. I emailed him once about what oil he runs in his 600 and his 800's, here is what he had to say:

"I run the Ultra Synthetic in both sleds. BRP recommends a blend in the 800. (syn & conventional) The conventional component generates a small amount of sulphated ash which cools the piston dome. I'm too lazy to use two oils and Shell guarantees that Snow Ultra will work just fine."

It was suggested that I run more of a conventional % in my mod sled (due to jetting leaner than recommended) to produce more of the ash component and possibly avoid melting holes in my piston domes (not that I have done that ;)). This is why I like the Advance (not the Ultra), the Ultra basically doesn't have enough "impurities" in it for my application, I need the ash component. So instead of mixing two oils, I just run the Advance. Its cheaper too and since its blue and I premix, I know when it has been added or not very simply by the colour. The Ultra is not as good for pre-mixing since it is the same colour as the gasoline.

As stated though, the Ultra is a great oil and I have nothing against it. I have not fouled valves on the Advance, but I'm not saying that it can't happen, especially if the oiler is set too rich. Tht's just my experience with it, I hope that helps.

Just to let people know, the shell advance oils are on sale right now at Canadian Tire. $33.00 a jug for the synthetic and $22.00/jug for mineral.
