They asked several members of council and they all said their phones were blowing up with concerned citizens stating they didn't want to be driving a rustbucket. They had a TON of negative feedback.

Remember the guy that sued over damage to his concrete?

That was right after they had a chemical engineer tell them that using it will cost tenfold in the long run in damage to infrastructure and vehicles. But that somehow dosent matter to them, they used it again anyways.

What do they care, they will all be long gone when this becomes a real problem. That chit is toxic swill that WILL rust your vehicle right chicken charlie. And makes the road it's applied to super greasy. Saw 4 accidents in a 6 block span on 23'rd St last year in Kill-Woods right after it was applied. Road was pure grease.

They made the switch to Calcium Chloride for use as road salt instead of normal salt which is Sodium Chloride. Basically the calcium chloride is more corrosive than standard roadsalt. The kicker is Calcium Chloride melts ice faster and works better at lower temperatures, which was the justification to switch.

Im for the east coast. The cars and trucks out there are white with salt in the winter.
I understand what both are. So people do not want ice control at all, and use sand???

FYI salt is just as bad for concrete and metal.
Same as beet brine.

The crap in the last few years is way worse then prior stuff, virtually everyone is saying it's showing in terms of rusting faster on their vehicles. Going back to just sand would make more sense. The biggest thing is people need to learn how to drive.

Well I’m not in Edmonton but we have similar practice here so am familiar with it and I hate it. One of the things I question is the practice of purposely leaving an inch or 2 of snow on the road then spending money on labour and diesel fuel to sprinkle their fairy dust crap all ove , then let us deal with the messy gross freeze thaw freeze thaw issues for the whole winter. Then wonder why you’re having issues with excessive cracking and potholes ? If you’re spending on labor and fuel driving around , scrape it to surface , followed by melt crap , but far less of it. Only thing different is more wear on grader blades. Our cities have never been uglier cause of this gross $hit everywhere , roads suffer huge, and it works when it’s warm but not so much in the colder temps.

Honestly I'd rather just see sand used with the exception of for freezing rain events. I don't understand the purpose or logic of putting salt on snow.

And yea the calcium chloride is definitely way worse on everything. Vehicles, roads, bridges. We work with it on a daily bases for cooling arenas. Drain a piece or equipment and let air to it and it will rot through in 1-2 weeks. If we spill a gallon of it we have to do an environmental report because of how bad it is to the environment. ( pretty much city rules in every city/county) but on the backside they spray millions of gallons all over the roads.

I deal with and sell calcium chloride. Its what every arena uses as “brine” for there cold and heat floor. If I get it on any of my tools I have 2 hours to clean em before rust starts to form. If you get it on your leather boots or gloves you have 4 hours before they start to shrink. It’s unreal on vehicles.
