figured I might as well start a thread and post the pics here, instead of sprinkling them around the site and hijacking other threads.....

6 of us on bikes came down and camped at Kvass Flats, the weather wasn't the best but we tried to make the most of it anyways.

Had the pleasure of meeting S&M member "Ivegotthenutz" and his son Matt, 'Nutz even dropped off some dry firewood for us at camp on saturday! It was very much appreciated, as it had rained almost all day saturday and we were all soaked to the bone when we got back from Kaw!

Also met another fine member by the handle "hobiretired" and his group that stopped and picked up my rear fender bag that fell apart and distributed my tools and rainpants, along with my insurance and registration folder along one of the nasty and steep rock garden chutes leading up to Hammel on monday.

2 for 2, both members I've met are great peeps!! Hope to meet more in the future.

some pics, starting out on sat at the Beaverdam Road. I'm the guy in front...

Nice pics...whats the story with the crosses in the last pic?
not sure Murray, I haven't run across anyone that knows yet. they've been there for at least the last 5 years when I was first there. Maybe Ivegotthenutz knows....one says "Al Enns" the other says "Jessica" on it.

Hi Murray:

The crosses are for a couple climbers that were killed climbing the shear rock face on the south side of Hammel......at least that was the story told to me when I lived there from '88-'92......nice pics, brings back a lot of fond memories of that area and the fun times we had quadding and camping!

the last couple times I've camped just north of the Smoky River bridge a few clicks north of town on the flats, on the east side of the highway. the riding areas are accessible from the Beaverdam Road located in between the bridge and the flats on the west side of the highway. there is a big sign at the Beaverdam Road with the trails marked on it.

if the Death Race trail remains the same, they run on the quad trails we were riding on. I think they run on the Beaverdam road, and cut across from the trail up to Hammel. not sure on their exact route, but there were signs telling the runners which way to go.

By quad or bike, you could be on the race trail in less than 5 minutes from the flats where we were camped. We make sure to stay away with the machines for the weekend of the Death Race, out of respect for the event. Don't need runners complaining about quads and bikes, making us all look bad....no sense giving ammo to those that would like to see the area OHV free......

I lived there for 10 years growing up and never saw that much of the surrounding area. I was young and never realized how great that place was for many years after. Great pics.

Hey Teeroy my group is planning an excursion out to Grande Cache. I was checking on the GC website and it says Mt. Hammel is now blocked by SRD. Sounds like where you were camped has good access to riding is it on public lands or private land? And was it close to the highway? I have stayed at the govt camp ground right by the river but i suppose we would have to haul the machines to Beaverdam rd. By the way do you have plans on going this year? we are planning July 24 th weekend.
