Commodities are bought and sold on the world stage at prices based on supply and demand, the reason we pay more for stuff has nothing to do with world pricing it has to do with the taxation we pay over and above the world pricing. Why would any corporation sell a product cheaper to one nation than it would another? you have to consider the price of the base product, the cost of refinement (these will be the same worldwide) then you have transportation costs, taxation, profit margin, etc... our transportation professionals are paid a higher wage in Canada as opposed to other countries, our taxes are higher than most, and our end product employees are paid better than a lot of foreign counterparts and profit margins may also be inflated. I have no issues paying more for gas if the industry is funding a bigger pay cheque for me, and our unemployment levels are low etc... the biggest issue is taxation, our governments provincial and federal are fancy free with spending our money, even if GDP increases and unemployment decreases taxes continue to rise. We pay out stupid amounts of welfare to people who are not held accountable, no drug testing for welfare recipients, even cigarettes, at $70+ dollars a week many welfare recipients smoke, and are asked nothing in return for thier cheque. Its the social systems we support that are killing the average canadian... just because we make it here doesn't mean it is a wise decision to sell it to locals cheaper other than the savings in transportation. If we did more in house refining and sold more of the refined end product as opposed to selling the raw material at a discounted price because it is "dirty oil" we would be much further ahead...but most of all we need to hold our elected officials accountable for their spending of OUR money.....

That is my campaign speech for the 2020 federal elections....

UMMM, NO. Harper shouldn't take credit for anything. The policies have been in place sense the Trodue gov't. I am a supporter of Harper don't get me wrong, however he has done a excellent job of riding out the good times. He was lucky that during a world wide economic melt down Canada was able to move through it with little harm. To give Harper credit for it is wrong. The credit should be given to the people of this country for banding together and who kept moving forward. If Harper jad any marbels at all he would say NO to those who want our resources. Why is it we have the oil, the tree's, the minerals and the water but yet have to pay the highest price for any of it. Someone needs to stand up and say no more unless your willing to pay.I say shut the taps off until we are paying next to nothing for our gas and lumber. Why should we have to pay more for gold that was mined and manufactured here then gold that comes from over seas?
Stop GIVING our resources away and start making OTHERS pay for it.
Don't get me wrong my lively hood and many others rely on these markets but wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to work so hard for others and could consintrate on working for ourselves?

well said! My wife did the 1996 census here in town and she was shocked at how many are on welfare but still have cell phone, newer vehicles etc etc. In one house, they had the whole dam family in there including grandma and uncle (government owned house for low income earners). The "wife" claimed separated with 3 kids but in fact "dad" worked and lived somewhere else and would come home for supper then leave late at night to go to his pad. In other words they were double dipping. Myself and some neighbours reported them and wasnt too long before they got caught. I am sure there are literally thousands of similar examples getting free rides in this country.

To me it looks more like Harper is serving "notice" to the US (specifically Obama) that fine you don`t want to work with us ,that`s cool. Just remember we offered you the chance and you brushed us off to get re -elected. We are sick and tired of your radical greenie groups sending funds up here to appose our energy policies.
When ,you need water the same rules will apply . We will now sell and do business with the highest bidder, thus the new agreements with China and the EU.You had your chance to work together and rejected it...........

You had better hope the middle east keeps them ships rolling, because you might not get a lot of energy supply from Canada in the near future....................

Never happen we all know in the end when the US says jump our gov will say how high and anyone with a spine now will eventually not get re-elected. It's a vicious cycle.

Anyway, we like to think we have control over our resources and who gets them, but don't kid yourself the American's call the shots more than we want to admit to. I dont like it but that is the fact.[/QUOTE]

Exactly most of the oil company's are based out of the states that are big players up here. I suspect that's a large reason why there's no new refineries built up here instead we pipe it down there.

I do agree with you Bogger. However I am actually a fan of tax. Tax me 100% as long as i don't have to pay for anything else. Look at Norway and Sweeden. Two countries with higher tax rates then ours, longer lives and a overall better life style. Shorter work weeks, more vacations etc. If you just flaunt your GDP and charge locals equal for their resources as foreign markets we will continue to pay top dollar for our gas, lumber and other goods. Agreed 100% about the welfare thing, the system was to designed to help those who can't help themselves but far too many are abusing the system. Same goes for the EI program, far to many people only work enough to claim.

Regrettably, our system is based on the bleeding hearts and penalizes those who work hard to better themselves. IMO anyone not working in this country either cant (and should be helped) or doesn't want to (and should be thrown out on his ass without a single tax payer dollar). Sounds harsh but based on my own experience who never wanted a hand out, managed to find a way to earn a buck or two to put food on the table and pay the mortgage. The 80's were some hard times and I still never missed a paycheque! I was told many years ago not to worry how much tax one pays but how much profit one makes or how much one spends. Some words of wisdom!

Wow, that an NDP wet dream if I ever heard one.

Notice Norway is only 5 million people sitting on a measley 148K square miles with fully 1/4 of the GDP coming from oil and gas??? They have (by capita) the highest rate of oil and gas production of any country. If you want to pay for stuff like you mentioned above let's get the pipe layed to Kitimat and some rigs drilling off Van. Island. Norway is what Ab could be without massive transfer payments.

WTF are you talking about massive transfer payments? None of the money that the provincial government collects from oil revenue or any other source goes to Ottawa or any other province. Transfer payments come out of our federal taxes.......

That must be the reason the media spins things around like that I didn't think anyone actually bought it. Money from Alberta goes to have not provinces, doesn't matter which way you spin it, it's from Albertans pockets from the oil revenues.

Norway is light years ahead of Alberta as far as oil production goes. Canada is good and world renowned for our practices but really have nothing on them boys. I was talking about their entire social system not their production of oil and gas. How could a country so small as you say be so efficiant in their ways and be so productive at the same time?

Federal taxes A.K.A Income Tax and most Albertans working in the patch pay a lot more than your average Joe.
I was under the impression that ALL Canadians pay tax? I think if you look at the top income earners by province you might be surprised where Alberta lies.

The fact is no matter how you CHOOSE to label it is. Alberta pays out far more than it recieves compared to other provinces !!! This is an undisputable fact......................Sadly it is the same provinces that continue to ridicule Alberta about "dirty oil", yet the extra cash appears to be quite clean, when they beg for it...................................

Nice to have all that oil money to pay for their social programs, or do you think it's all efficiency??

I just read that the average top earners in "have not provinces" pay more towards the equalization payments than those who live in provinces that do not receive these payments.

I also remember listening to a CBC broadcast saying that the contribution per person to the equalization program is distorted out of Alberta due to the large percentage of out of province workers.

Maybe there wouldn't be so many "out of province workers" if alberta knew how to do it right...........
