I've just got back from driving to Prince Rupert and back in my 2012 Chevy 1500 LT with the Tow package. I did not get a trailer brake from the factory (as I didn't think I'd be pulling a trailer with brakes for a while, haha go figure). I installed an aftermarket trailer brake controller myself and hooked up the wire between the fender and the fuse box. Once we got to Prince Rupert we found that the trailer battery was going dead, didn't have a multimeter to check if we were charging or not. Put the battery on the trickle charger once we got home and it's held a charge. Gonna look for this constant 12V source tomorrow. Thanks!
