Mixed emotions after watching the global 11:00pm news. They gave a nice coverage of our fallen brothers in golden............ But, on the other hand, interviewed a guy from nova scotia, who said highmarking should be outlawed? Wtf???

Also interviewed gforce and his wifey and showed some nice sledding..... Attaboy, greg!!!

They also showed some vids that members from our site posted on here of avy's they set off, that never caused any harm, but they suggested it was death defying.......... Omg, like any sledder ever tries to set off an avy!!!!

Anyone else see it, and have an opinion?
I could really rant on this, but thought i would let others, first!!!!

They should close the mountains and make sledding illegal then I will still ride and there will always be fresh snow. Media and Internet will be the death of sledding. We will always be the hells angels of the snow to the nerds who ride buses to work to save $$$ and can't even slightly understand what we do

I have been watching/following some of this coverage as well and feel the same way. It really appears to me that when a skier or snowboarder gets caught and passes away it is painted as "a tragedy" and media does not seem to paint it with the same brush. When a snowmobiler is caught we are painted as playing "russian roulette" or are just a bunch of "death defying" idiots that are just looking for something to destroy.

I have been riding for 15 years and it seems only over the last 2-3 years this has really been the trend.

Everyone playing in the hills is an outdoor enthusiast whether you are a sledder or a skier and we are simply trying to enjoy the wonders of the world that mother nature provides and it would sure be nice to be painted with the same brush.

Just my opinion.

All my condolences go out to the families and friends of the fallen.

yes i saw it was ok . but liek i said to the wife those vids off our site/you tube were from 1-2yrs ago. however the guys at the end of the vids bragging about setting them off kinda made us look like idiots:eek: thanks guys.

but from the pic of the hill that these guys, the avy victims, were climbing, or supposedly climbing, wth were they thinking seriously, sun blasting that hill every day, i could imagine the layers on it, it was an acident waiting to happen and screamed stay the fug away. dont have to be an avy expert to see that sign. but anyways thats just my opinion.

That sledding and avalanche footage they have really paints a safe picture.
Nothing like showing the absolute extremes.

The news media for the most part are sensationalists and I suspect are mostly granola munching greenies at heart. At least Global did not show a race up the mountain with about 20 sleds like CBC does. The you tube videos gave a pretty bad impression of sledders in my opinion. Unfortunately that is what will stick in most peoples minds when they think of mountain sledders.
My condolences and prayers go out to the family members and friends of the victims.

No doubt that guy dont know ch!t about sledding. and Sorry to say but the hill those guys were climbing was just waiting to slide.

I like how they say sledding covers half the deaths in the last decade. What causes the other half? Skiing Snowshoeing? So how are we really any worse than others. If i remember right hasnt the the avy deaths in sledders dropped over the last couple years?

I think these guys need to actually see what it is like and that is it snow all just a death defying adventure. I think i may make up a big video of footage from this weekends MM4 event and send it in to all the new channels. or maybe that will make us seem dangerous.

Seemed to be ok coverage. Three sides to every story. And everyone is entitled to their opinion as far as sledding goes.

I am with you all! So if snowmobiles cause 1/2 the avy's deaths( thought they said just under 1/2) , what cause the other half?? I mean it is sad no matter who gets caught in one, everyone has family's and is out doing something they love to do ...so are they going to close the backcountry to all skiers, hikers, snowboarders ect also? I mean really  I would say as a mountain snowmobiler I am more cautious and aware of the dangers then some NFLD fella that has never been, not to mention the backcountry skier/snowboarder that thinks they need no knowledge due to the fact that they only have wood stapped to their feet..what are they going to cause? My husband had 3 cousins that were back country skiers and avid outdoors guys and 2 out of the 3 died in an avy, they were all out telemarking. It can happen to anyone at anytime..mother nature can be a real... .

One thing we have to remember is the media will always pick up on the negative. Without that what would they have to report on? Unfortunatley to many people "sledding" in the back country is dangerous due to the risks involved. To someone who has never been sledding in this terrain they do not understand as all they have ever seen and listened to is the negative aspects reported by the media. Just like Greg stated in the footage changing the laws won't make a difference. "...changing attitude is the key." As a sledder it is up to us to be informed and educated. Unfortunately there are dangerous riders out there just as there are dangerous drivers. If you choose to ride like this then there may be consequences. It is up to us to show everyone the positive aspects of sledding. Maybe we all need to take footage of our next back country trip and send it in to the news stations so everyone can see the "beauty" of sledding in the back country!:):)

SAR incidents from 2007 to 2010. just a few of the list that we attend to province wide.

Hiking 400
boating 160
snowmobiling 175
sking and snowboarding 140
walkaway and runaway 157
Mtn. biking 58

there are many more but the total is 2048 call outs and snowmobiling accounts for 9 % of all incidents over those years. hikers account for 20% of our call outs, as far as the deaths over all I am not at liberty to put those numbers out there as I only have the fatalities for the Robson valley.
