a guy i know west of red deer had his house blow up west of red deer a few years ago, they were diggig in the yard and dug up the gas line, may have pulled on the line? anyway they left it till the next day, he went to work, and while on the way home for lunch, he saw a plume of smoke in the area of his house, his wife and kids escaped when the house started to shake, needless to say they got extremely lucky, point is gas at 4 0z pressure will explode,

call before ya dig, all the time. winter freeze and thaw moves utilies around in the excavated holes, till they pack down. be safe!

hmm, seems like i get to mark it before you even show up. for what it is worth, first call will inform all members on there service that the caller requires utilities to be marked. as it stands now they will mark there lines to the meter on the power pole or on the house etc. secondary services from the house to garage or out buildings they will not do. and gas co-ops ad gas companies are not all marking lines past the meter, some do though. anyway put the line deeper, people forget where they are.

but you can do anything you like, as once it is buried "out of sight, out of mind".
When I built my fence, the First Call responders marked the power, phone and gas lines from my house to the detached garage, as well as the lines from the main to the meter.

Someone had to google it....

Frequently Asked Questions, Natural Gas Information, FAQ | Protech Plumbing

About halfway down the page... 18- 24". It also says that homeowners in the City of Calgary cannot obtain a gas permit only qualified gas fitters so you're going to have to do it in conjunction with a plumber anyways if you want to be in compliance with the bylaws.

when did you build your fence dave? this has just been for the past year or so. telus, power are geerally not marking secondary services in most of the rural areas, and alot of the residential. mainly because homeowners have done the install and haven't hooked up the sheath grounds.

Call the city to be sure, if it needs to be inspected by them. Really the only way to be sure. Would suck if it was 24 inches. Lol. Rent a hand operated trencher, put the line in a little deeper.

Codes are there for a reason. Just because you think it is better does not mean it is.
