Frozen Fingers

I'm curious what the answer from the specialist will be. I have been wondering the same thing about my big toe. I did this to my toe on a very cold Feb 23rd in Elkford. It started out mostly white with no feeling at all, except a tingling in a dime sized area that was blue/black. Then, it swelled and blistered. Over the next few days, the frozen white part turned black as well and the feeling (pain) returned. In the last three days the pain has subsided and the affected part has become rock hard.

My brother says that next it will form a scab and fall off. Sounds like fun .

Damn you froze them good even the toenails turned black!

Good luck to you...My personal opinion is you will be fine...

Severely froze my nose this season at work...Sledding 22 miles at -36, not smart. Had all me gear on but the cold snuck in there still. My nose looked like mammas toe. Sounds exactly like your fingers, it blistered and hurt first, then turned black and looked like jerky then began to peel and peel and peel. Its been almost 2 months and although looking normal still hurts and freezes in seconds now on a cold day...

But almost total recovery. It takes a lot of time, but it seems to heal itself...Best of luck, dont let anyone cut off any fingers without many opinions...

I met with the burn specialist at the UofA Hospital yesterday. They confirmed that 3 of the 4 fingers were badly frost-bit. Pointer finger isn't too bad. But -they confirmed that the fingers should heal - on their own - without any surgical "stuff" over the next 4-6 weeks.

As "Longhorn" noted the fingers should continue to blister/dry/scab and eventually the dead skin should fall off over time. I'll still be able operate a brake lever - not that I do that too much!:d

However, they also indicated that we can take alot (re. frostbite) before our bodies need surgery (skin grafts or even amputations). Good to know. "Beeonaplug" I cannot even imagine the pain and extended recovery that your brother went through after is plane crash. Now - that's brave.

"Sled Mamma" it would appear that your toe is healing similarily to my fingers. But - if the scab doesn't start coming off in the next week or so, or a foul smelling discharge comes from the area get to your Dr. ASAP.

keep ur shoes on youll never notice

and as dumb as it sounds if ya have a dog that wants to lick it if its not too painfull it will heal quicker

Ive had that happen to my fingers digginout my truck when I lived in NWT,they all went black and blistery then peeled layers of skin for along time,they healed up but are real sensitive to the cold now.

you should be fine as long as you keep em clean from gang green...i worked with this guy and every winter he had one finger that would freeze and turn black and fall off..(the tip not the whole finger people)and magotts will eat the dieing flesh ...i saw that on gladiator and war documentories.why dont you send in some pictures so we can properly asses the damage LOL
