Re: March 7/13: Free avalanche workshop

Hey all MEC is holding a free avalanche seminar Thursday March 7/13 @ 7:00pm at their downtown store.

Check it out!

***SPECIAL EVENT**** Avalanche Safety Workshop - Mar07 | MEC Events

I'm not sure why your promoting this corporation on a powersports website rowdy.
The fact that your being invited indicates that you shop there.
Attendance only helps them, as the recorded attendance numbers will inevitably be construed as support for this type of back country use.
The sad part of this story is its "our kind" that raise the majority of donations that go towards keeping the CAC a world class forecasting operation. I encourage you not to attend

First off i am not promoting this corporation, secondly I had no idea that they lobby against sledders. And actually I don't shop there I was in contact with them regarding the beacon basin I was trying to promote to go up into the city. In his response he mentioned the avalanche workshop and lastly I saw it as an opportunity to gain more training and figured some other sledders could benefit from free training as well.

Not sure why you and Pistonbroke seem to be trying to hang me from the rafters.

The only thing I have "bought" from them is advising my friend to rent a beacon, probe and shovel for the weekend when I brought them out sledding.

If MEC is against sledders does anyone know if Atmosphere is as well? Keep in mind a lot of newer sledders are not aware of who is "against" sledders and who is not.

Hey now - I'm not "hanging you from the rafters". All I am after is to raise awareness that MEC works against us!

It wouldn't matter who had posted about MEC, my response would be the same.

Here's a list of grant recipients from MEC in 2012. There are some real beauties in there such as the Sierra Club, etc etc etc.

I am kinda hostile.....towards MEC! ;)

So question...and just to play the devils advocate and poke the bear so to speak.

Better for sledders to not attend and not be there to stand up for us

Or

Show up, not sign up or in if at all possible and be there to positively represent the snowmobiling community?

I am pretty sure I have read that atmosphere supports organizations like the Sierra club etc
how ever that may have changed now that Newfie speed and sound owns them

I looked up this thread, I had also wrote MEC a letter a few years back, looking for theirposition on sledding and received a similar response.

https://www.snowandmud.com/snowmobile-chat-14/mountain-equipment-co-op-41265.html

I have shopped and have for 25 years as I have been climbing for more yearsthen that and they have good deals on climbing equipment.

I have talked with sales people in the Edmonton store that are clearly against snowmobiling, but have also found others over the years that have a similar attitude as my own….

I was raised with a respectful back ground with regards to animals, nature and our role within our environment. IE Leave no trace and only take memories. That type of thought process is what I and my family carry with us while under taking every outdoor activity that we choose to involve ourselves in.

We ride horses, sleds, quads, bikes, ski both down hill and cross country we hike and climb both summer and winter….and all can be done while respecting the environment….you just have to choose to…..

I am not a MEC advocate nor am I against them…..

If I were in Calgary, I would go to the free seminar

Thank you Iron Horse. I for one am going to the workshop. I will have my sled in the back of my truck with a skidoo jersey and a 509 jacket. Those that want to join me feel free those that don't, don't come. Either way I'm going to represent sledders in a positive way and attend and if need be stand up to negativity towards the sport. I have other sledders joining me and good for them.

Whether you come or don't, everyone should have some avy training. :)
