Picked up a formula Z 583 tonight. Sleds rough around the edges but has 120 psi per cylinder.
Runs but only if using the primer. Will clean the carbs tomorrow. Has flex skis. I’m thinking it’s a 99 but I’m having trouble decoding the vin. Shows 2500 miles. Must of sat outside it’s whole life.
Vin: R0000 03256

Anyway to get the white colouring out of the gas tank. Also trailing arms are peeling and rusty.

Yes from pictures I seen i think it’s a 99.
Next?
”R” digit in the serial number:
so far reading doo talk tells me either...
”pre-production testing model”
”rental”
”replacement tunnel”

People have asked the same question on theirs for a 1978 and a 1991 so nothing new from skidoo. Answers seem to vary. Doo experts?

Looks like a 99 to me, my dad had one for me to ride when I was like 14 and that was in 1999

Those are definitely 99 graphics but the VIN is a bit of a mystery. A 1999 Formula z 583 should be a 1391 or 1392 model number, but yours is stamped all zeros( first group of digits should be the model number). Very curious.

Thats how skidoo did the bins back then. In provinces where you absolutely required 17 digits to register, you had to ad two zeros at the front and four zeros in the middle and another two at the end. That made up the 17 digits required. They came with 9 digits stamped i the tunnel, this one has the “R” which is odd?

First group of numbers contains the model number. Yours does not. My guess would be tunnel replacement.

Prototype doesn't seem likely since the Formula Z in that chassis had been around for quite awhile already. Nothing new to prototype.

I might have an S-2000 chassis fuel tank in my shed, next to new condition. took it off my '96 MXZ 583 and replaced it with a clear tank. I'll go look for it if you're interested.

Probably not going to do much work or put in any money as its not in that great of shape. But I will keep this in mind if I decide to keep it.
Needs:
Seat or cover
trailing arms powder coated
Tracks not in great shape.
ski rods
