I need a dozer at the farm. At this point I'm thinking about getting my own. Looking at D6's with a S/U Blade. Where is the best place to look? The obvious is RB but what other options are there. Who in the Edmonton area other then Finning has a selection of good used older equipment?

Wajax, brand tractor or kijiji....try market place(book) Google search. These are where I go. I’m finding equipment is a little cheaper going east. Lowbed costs aren’t to bad if you can find a back haul. Being in Edmonton is a great place to be for that.

Question for you that run this equipment on a regular day to day.

I have noticed that equipment sells cheaper sometimes at a distance from Alberta. Down in the states or eastern Canada. Im looking at some equipment on RB. Are you worried about buying at auction when you cant test the equipment or is RB good at backing you on the purchase.

All I will say is do your research . Complete dispersal equipment and work orders helps .
Anything can be tampered with in regards to hours and info.
Guy bought a D6T and come to find out it wasn’t as advertised and nothing could be done . And he knew some high up management at RB.

What exactly are planning to do with it? I have 6R with a VPAT blade that I use on the farm. After owning one and seeing that it is a continual money pit I would suggest renting or leasing for your projects sending it back when your done.

I have approx 400 acres to clear. Having my own machine would allow me to clear what I want cleared and minimize clearing unfarmable land. Also with the cost of inputs on the rise the less obstacles to go around the lower the cost of farming. So with that each field I have can be improved whether it be move mass amounts of dirt and landscaping certain aspects. In my world nothing is square or flat, lots of sloughs and lots of hills. The machine would probably be used off and on for a few years.

Thats why Im concerned about buying at auction. If its cheap its probably got a good reason.

I was looking at some low hr (5000hrs) machines that seemed to be in decent shape. Under carriage and cab looked clean, but not being able to smell the oil or run the machine through some tests leaves me un easy.

Here is what you need:

A D6R or T will be a little small for clearing. Great machines for grading and finishing work. At 5000hr depending on use the U/C will likely be at the end of its life. Shoot me a pm and we can swap notes if you like.

A muncher is nice, we have had contractors come in a do some. A muncher doesn't push dirt very well and I need to landscape as well.

X2.
NRS coolers are easy to block off but DEF not so much. Try to stay 2015 or older.

Depending on how big of trees and bush you need push or how many low spots you need to deal with, a D6 LGP might be all you need. For heavy bush moving though you might find a D8 more adequate. That said though to rent a big machine just for the heavy moving and using the smaller one for the rest of your work is an option too.

What are you replacing at 5000hrs? The undercarriage needs work?

DPF filter or what ever Cat calls it needs to be switched out . Every newer one we have on site requires it .
The contractors are deleting most of them due to the cost .
Not only that but just try a switch a injector or anything on top end .
Also a motor at around the 7000 hr mark on most of them .
The list goes on and on with the emissions related problems.

Yes emission is a pain, I have most of my equipment deleted.

The cats Im targeting are older in the 1995-2000 range with 3306 engines.

At 5000hr on a pre emission machine you should still be watching for wear on the hard nose, hard bar, under carriage and bushings on blade and ripper. Motor and transmission should have life left in them, but electrical is known to cause issues especially in the years you are looking at. I wouldn’t own or operate a cat without diff steer, but that is my preference. Also, what is the thinking with the SU blade versus tilt or VPAT? A D6 machine really can’t make full use of a SU blade so having the versatility of the other blades is nice.

The machine I use on the farm is a 2005 D6R LGP with a VPAT blade and a ripper at 7000hrs. In the last four years I have spent close to $100000 on it. Motor top end, U/C (we changed it ourselves), bushings, electrical, etc. It is a very versatile machine and does a lot of things well, but looking at the cost/benefits of owning vs renting I would have been far better off renting or leasing for farm use. I have been able to cross ulitilize it in couple of my other businesses which helps, but I still cringe everytime a neighbor of friend who farms suggest owning one is an economic move. For reference I currently own 6 dozers. All Cateripillar ranging in size from a 4 to a 10.
