It's not an easy thing... I can tell you that.

I had a loser tenant that claimed when he moved out that there were bed bugs in the basement suite.

Turns out there wasn't. I did do some research.

You have to get rid of all upholstered furniture, or freeze them in -20 for a few days. The inside has to be heated up to 40 or 50 deg C for 12 hours. Wash all your linens with HOT water.

They live in small cracks, like under baseboard, behind electrical plates, in mattress seams.. etc. and leave a red tinge on things. They can live without food for over 12 months, so more than 1 application is needed. 1 bug can lay many many eggs, and they can lay dormant too.

Exterminators are the most effective, but can cost thousands of dollars. That is because they come back in a month or so and re-apply, again and again.

Good luck I am glad I didn't have to deal with them.

boric acid is the cheapest way, but not 100% effective. they lay it along baseboards etc and the critters walk thru it, boric acid looks like tiny shards of glass under a microscope. it breaks thru their exoskeleton and they "bleed" out their fluids effectively drying them out. the only way to completely exterminate them is as Cuso says, to use the heat method in repeated applications.

there is no cheap way to get rid of them, I have been following this bed bug thing since last year when they were first reported in Edmonton hotels. it's becoming a huge problem in north america since the pesticide DDT has been banned and will continue to get worse.

a couple tips for staying in any hotel, never put your clothing on the floor and always put your suitcase up high like on the fold out stands they provide. put all your dirty clothes into a plastic bag and carry separately from your luggage, wash them in hot water as soon as you get home and do it at the laundromat. never lay your clean clothes out on the bed, ever.

I wish you luck man, this ch!t skeeves me the fawk out. bring back DDT!

I heard that using Diatomaceous Earth also helps. I use it in chicken feed, nesting boxes. It is suppose to dry out the exoskeleton of the pest, much like Boric Acid. You can get food grade DE from almost any feed lot and is fairly cheap. Good luck in the extermination.

I had them, got them from an open camp in wabasca, luckly we got them quick cause they can spread through out the house fast, it was also good that it was -30 when we found them cause i kicked out the window in my master over the driveway and through everything we could out the window onto the driveway and let the room freeze. I found a small nest on the wood slats of out ikea bed, the matress, bed frame dresser went out the window, all clothes went into garbage bags and were taken to laundromat to wash, any stuffed animals the wife had were thrown out, all baseboards were ripped out in the room and all cracks, crevases were steamed. We went and talked to the exteminators about the issue and the cost for them to spray was hurendous but we bought the chemicals and sprayed ourselfs all over the house to be sure, used a few applcations. I'm paranoid about them now, and check every hotel we stay at throughly. Their becoming an empidemic in this provence due to the migrant worker force, apparantly ft. mac is over run with them and alot of places in edmonton are finding them.

This is an example of what not to use a Forum for. I am the manager of the Sandman Hotel in Revelstoke. They complained so we put the room offline that day and had a proffessional comapny come in and check it. There was no evidence of bed bugs. I called them back and told them but i guess they had already put this up. Would have been nice to have a retraction.

This CAN happen at any hotel and we need your help. We take it seriously and is not a reflection on the standard of the hotel. They could have brought them with themselves.
