Didn't think you could get flood insurance in Canada even if you wanted it,? You would be screwed without government in situations like Chetwynd

I know there are some places (natural flood plains along side creeks and rivers) where you can't get any kind of insurance (not even mortgage insurance) for flooding. I also know places where flood insurance from broken pipes inside the house and outside the house (i.e. main water lines), and rainfall flooding is available. I have insurance on my property for just that.
Speaking to the scenario that snopro posted, I would hope that those of us who pay the price for insurance would be a lot better off claim wise than the dude who relied on governmental assistance.
Just renewed our house insurance this month and I noticed that we have a discount for being in a "wildfire protection community"! The town, in its wisdom, has taken the initiative to thin out the thicker bush to mitigate the situation in the event of a major fire. Hoping I never have to see how it works.
