First time up the Alaska Highway[emoji1303]

I stopped at the liard pullout, was wondering how far in are the springs walking, there are a lot of bears up there and I'm not that brave lol

the springs are in a monitored campground area - the paths when i was there were all nice wooden paths and people are strictly forbidden to feed bears after that 1 incident 16-17years ago.

lots of people there in the day , its a little walk on the path but it never felt that dangerous really most of the surrounding area off path is partially marsh like area part of the hot springs overflow.

its a nice stop for sure if i remember right there are 2 separate areas , ones more shallow with a small 3-4foot waterfall to sit under and the other down the path more is deeper like a dugout

i was only 15 years old when i went there so its hard to remember much more.

There is a toll gate I could see off the road , I could likely get all the info there but pointless too stop if it's like a long way in.thx for the info...

Not very far . The gate is for registering campers into campsite.
From pull out for trucks the total walk is about a km.
Nothing to worry about IMO .
Been to area lots and the incident years ago could have been avoided as most .
Buddy is from Toad River that responded at the time and a bit different story then what some say?
Go for it as well worth the walk.
You will need a nap after the dip though. The hot springs make you sleepy for some reason . Lol

I don't remember the walk in being very far.........duno. As someone else said the wood
sidewalk going in is surrounded by kinda marsh land. I also thought it was hot spring overflow
type area.I'm sure any bear's wouldn't like the sulfer smell and all of the foot traffic . One bear
incident year's ago doesn't classify the area as bear danger IMO.....
If you are going north again stopping in the hot spring's is a MUST IMO.You will never forget it.

I actually visited it the same time it happened well not same week but around the same year.

and apparently people were feeding a bear and if i remember she had cubs.

she(mama bear) caught some woman and her kid on the path and took them out.

after that it was a no exceptions rule any bear that has been fed or seen in camp was put down.

hope i dont have the story muffed it was 16+ years ago

It takes 5 minutes. The walk is really easy and the path/boardwalk is wide enough for a golf cart. The wife and I have done it several times in the dark. Day or night I promise you won'tb e disappointed.

I rode the alaskan highway on the 50th anniversary.It was a great trip on two wheels back then there was a long strip of gravel going thru fireside i think it was called,I'm sure the highway has changed a lot since the 90s.Great scenery,and yes the hot springs are a must.

The highway all the way too Whitehorse was good, about 6 or 7 10 klm stretches under construction or seal coating, not bad for 2200 klms, thanks for the info guys, I will spare the pics of me in a bathing suit lol, will post some pics of the place (me excluded , haha )

cool, I was up there that same year, 1992...the yankee motorhome traffic was insane. the early/mid 90's was when they were straightening out the highway, there was a lot of construction going on. it was my second trip up there, went to go and stay with my brother in law in Marsh Lake and do some dirt biking with a buddy. I was driving my fairly new '91 GM half ton with 2 - KX 500s in the box. we went through one spot that was all tore up and there was a huge buggy with a water tank spraying the road to keep dust down, we were in a long line of traffic crawling along as this thing was approaching and spraying down the road soaking all the vehicles with water and road crud in the process...I'm thinking "man, this guy gonna water blast dirt and sand all over my new truck" and just as he gets to us he shuts off the sprayer and throws us the horns! as soon as he went by, he cranks the sprayer back up...it was awesome lol.

the GM loaded up and ready to head to Whitehorse back in '92. my buddy's "little" sister sitting on one of the bikes.

Thats funny I bought two brand new chevys that year,I miled one out and gave the other one to my mom for her to drive in the summer only and when she passes away i get it back it only has 70000 km.Ill have to get some picture and post them,It was a good year I rode up to whitehorse for the regional Hog Rally.

I had to have my rear tube repaired at the HD dealer in Whitehorse on that trip, I had the tires changed before we left at a local shop and just picked up the bike the day before we left. first ride after unloading up there and the bike has a shimmy, not long after the rear goes flat. had no tire tools (or interest in repairing tires back then) and the HD dealer was the only place in town that would do bike tires. dropped it off, went back to pick it up and the mech has it fixed and asks if he can keep the spare parts...spare parts? wtf...and then he shows me what the local bike shop left inside my rear wheel...I sh!t you not...

Catmando, if you're going into the springs I would take a can of bearspray in, especially in the evening. I've been in there many times with my family and seen the occasional bear and many moose (cow moose with calves are dangerous as f@ck). Thankfully I've never had to use the spray, but it's peace of mind for me and my kids, grandkids and it weighs next to nothing.

I was living in Fort Nelson when the bear got those people at Liard. If someone would have had bearspray back then, Ray and the woman from the states likely would have survived.

Yes I have bear Spray, been working in the bush a long time ,would go without azz wipe before I would go without bear spray lol

Your pics of the signposts brought back some old memories. We lived there in the early 60's when there was only a few poles up, my brother and sister were born there. My Grandparents owned Rancheria, about an hour north of Watson Lake.

I stopped in and ate at Rancheria, great little place, will stop there again, people were very friendly, food was great
