ya you are supposed to pay gst on the value of the item, even ebay. You will pay gst on the value you paid converted to canadian so be prepared.

Everything I have ever imported, I had to pay GST, and the border wanted me to verify the price of the purchase so that they made sure I wasn't low balling the purchase to lower the amount of GST. So make sure you have proof of the advertised price where you bought it and even a copy of the ad, or the web address of the dealer, Or you will have to prove similar items at similar prices or the border agents will "estimate" the price and charge you what ever amount they feel the trailer is worth. I have never imported a sled trailer, but I have brought in holiday trailers and vehicles.

Border is clamping down. There are huge fines and penalties for trying to cheat the gov. People have tried to lie about the cost of a vehicle and ended up having fines/penalties so large that these people were better off leaving the keys on the counter and walking away. One story on the news was the guy who lied about the Mercedes he was bringing in. After all said and done it ende dup costing him twice as much!!!

Don't even thin about trying to screw the Border guys on the GST. The commodity tax guys who work for me are all too busy disputing these "ascertained forfietures" right now. Because they are levied under the Customs Act and not the Excise Tax Act - the offense can be criminal - and the fine can be up to the value of the goods themselves. Twice the value if there is import duties on them.

Because the trailer has to be registered in Canada - you will also have to pay the RVIA fee, get a compliance letter from the manufacturer that ther are no recalls and have the "inspection". Plus - you have to inform the border crossing on the U.S. side at least 72 hours before you arrive that you are bringing the trailer across. Make sure if you are buying from a dealer you have the invoice , and the title if required. I had one trailer come across this summer that I purchased in Texas, and the guy I brought it from just sent photocopies with the driver and mailed me the originals. That hung the trailer (and the driver) at the border for three days.

I have brought a number of horse trailers up from the States. The easiest thing to do is get a good customer broker to do it for you - takes all of the hassles out. PM me if you want a couple of names

I get to go shopping for a new horse trailer next year and I know what I want, to bad I can't get it used. No it will have to be new for what I want and it is going to hurt the bank account because I will only pay for it in cash.

I have a lot of experience buying horse trailers. In my experience you can get anything used. Especially with the shake-up that we have seen in Texas and Colorado over the sub-prime mess. What kind of trailer are you looking for? Goose or bumper pull? LQ? How many horses?
