Looking for some "experienced" opinions/answers on Aluminum trailers. Im looking at selling my aluminum Triton with a fibreglass coverall and upgrading to a Aluminum enclosed trailer. I need to go to one that will hold 3 sleds, and need to know how long would I need.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of aluminum and/or steel.
Thx

Aluminum trailer is great if you have a smaller tow unit, as they are super light. However...they have been known to blow over in the wind because they are so light. I got mine from a buddy that rolled his on the hiway on his way to pick up 2 used sleds, so trailer was empty on hiway, strong winds, and poof over she goes. The other downside is that aluminum is very expensive to fix or repair compared to steel.

Good news for me is that I can weld aluminum and have my own spool gun, so I got a 19k trailer for 2600 bucks. I have some repairs to do, but I pulled this trailer all last year and love it. I likely have about a 1000 bucks in repairs to do, but then she is brand new again.

Personally I like the steel trailers, but I have a lot of truck to pull with so weight is never an issue. Steel rusts, aluminum doesnt, but aluminum does oxidize and needs to be cleaned with acid, but still not a big deal.

Lastly aluminum is quite a bit more expensive than steel but worth it in weight savings.

For me I see advantages to both, so personal preference...

Here is the damage to mine, that wrote it off...

Thx for the info, the trailer I have now always has at least one sled on it for just that same reason even if it is more streamlined and lower I was still concerned on flipping it. I am thinking of going to the 8,5 wide Aluminum unit as it would be nice NOT to haul out ramps etc and deal with the slush etc. Just dropping a door/ramp seems a lot easier. What length unit should I get to fit 3 sleds? (1 Summit, Polaris Edge tourer and a 600RMK).

We can get three XP's into a 16'x8.5' its super tight so I'd go 18' or bigger. It sure is nice to get changed inside. I wish they would make the tongues longer so you could still use the deck:rant: Is your Fiberglass for sale? 12'?:d

jetchecker09,

I sell a line of All Aluminum trailers named Legend. We make a very affordable 3 place inline 7' wide by 23' that weighs in at 2500 lbs. It has fully finished white interiors, Aluminum wheels, full 24" ATP kickplate, Stainless Steel cam bars and a 110 power package for $11,206.00 + GST. Or a 8.5 X 26' with the same options for $14,306.00 + GST.

These trailers are designed to hug the road and are super safe to pull with the wide axle stance and low ceiling heights of 6' in the 7 wides, or 6'6" in the 8.5 wide.

Longhorn mentioned that Aluminums are prone to tipping over in high crosswinds, but that is only with the Deck over style units, not the Midship. Unless she's blowing really hard and then nothing is safe!!! LOL

Below is a link to my Manufacturer's website. Take a look around and give me a ring if you have any questions.

Ron,

I agree 100%, mine of course is a deck-over, I also have midship cargo trailers and never an issue with them...

BTW Longhorn $2600.00 for that unit is just plain theft!!! LOL. If you need parts from the factory let me know. The two plants are pretty close so you could just ship it to Legend and I will bring them home in one of my loads.

Now you wanna talk Crosswinds!!! LOL or Maybe Headwinds!!! LOL Either way its high :)

Yea, I jumped at the deal, it seemed too good to pass up! And thanks so much for the offer, I will be ordering some parts for sure.

In your pics above, will 5 sleds fit in the 8.5 x 26? I know you and I discussed trailers last year and I am still interested in a unit that will haul 5 mtn sleds. I 'thought' I needed a 27' but I love that 26' in the picture.

All you need is 2' more to haul 5 mountain sleds 28' overall. The key is 22' of straight wall to get 5 in, we run a 6' V-Nose which is sweet to load in and out of the 63" door width. Same trailer color and all 28' with 5200lb axles for $16,177.00 or choose your Two/Tone!

Thx to all for the opinions and info, looks like I will be heading for the Aluminum midship model then. And apparently will have to give Firefly a call. Once I have one in my yard then will put the Top Cap fibreglass coverall up for sale. Stay tuned if your interested. Dont believe I m sayin this, but come on snow!
