It was snowing pretty good when I left this morning. Not sticking around down low but up high it should start accumulating. Temps have to stay cool going forward.

Top of a mountain north of Elkford last Friday. Last nights storm may have changed things a bit but it's got a long way to go.

Notice to Back Country Users: The Fernie Snowmobile Association and Jemi Fibre have entered into a land use agreement for the 16/17 winter season that will, again, graciously permit public recreational use of private Jemi Fibre lands. As part of this agreement, it is imperative that all backcountry users respect active logging closures until such activities are complete. Heavy logging activity is anticipated out Coal Creek for much of the season and will result in a CLOSURE of staging and access at the Coal Creek trailhead until approximately mid-February. Up to and until this time, the FSA will focus our efforts on maintaining the Morrissey staging area as a main access point and will work closely with Fernie Wilderness Adventures to ensure the respectful and safe passage of backcountry users through their private lands. Please note: it is illegal to operate a snowmobile on a plowed forest service road. For more information please email info@ferniesnowmobile.com.

Private lands?

Yes, the logging company (it used to be Tembec and now it is Jemi Fibre) owns huge blocks of land in the eastern Kootenays and the FSA has land agreements with them and the Federal Government. Coupled with the land Teck owns and a some large blocks that are Federal Government crown land, access can sometimes get a little complicated. I'm pretty sure the land that FWA utilizes for CatSkiing is tenured, not owned.

For the weekend warriors, please remember that logging and/or logging services can continue through the weekends (flatbeds hauling equipment, fuel trucks, and sometimes logging trucks), so please respect the closure and do not ride on plowed logging roads. This will effect Coal Creek (as stated above) and also Corbin access to Coal Creek via the yellow gates.

Interesting. Sc800 and I ran into a cat skiing guy last year, and he was showing us the land they owned. I asked him twice if it was a tenure and he said nope they owned it. He could have been yanking my chain though.

The riding areas have always been there lol. We kinda preferred having trees to keep people away.

Now they will just be more stump farms.
