Ever wonder what snowmobiling means to our small communities?

[VARDA]

A little while ago, VARDA commissioned an Economic Impact study on the value of snowmobiling to our community. Our club paid for this out of pocket due to the demand from local governments, funders and stakeholders for more hard numbers relating to the true value of sledding to Valemount. As our favorite pastime and more importantly, our communities main winter economic driver becomes more threatened, these numbers are extremely valuable.

The British Columbia Snowmobile Federation is now fundraising for a similar project and this is extremely important to their future efforts in protecting our riding and the future of snowmobiling. Come to think about, every club in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia should be donating. There are going to be major ramifications when the government decides to start closing areas and I'm betting the consultations are going to be minimal and a very united front is going to have to be mobilized.

Sorry man, if you mean the survey in the Eco study, that is already completed. The data is there just to show what questions were asked and is part of the final study report.

Tough for government's to ignore those kind of numbers.

Be interesting to factor in all the money spent upstream on hwy 16.
Gas,meals, parts, repairs, sleds, trailers.

The number would be impressive.

The study mentions on Page 16 they we’re not able to capture the impact of the capital investment of “snowmobilers who have begun to make a more long term investment through real estate”. If this were able to be factored in the numbers would be even more indicative of the overwhelmingly positive impact sledders have had on the community of Valemount and surrounding area. I would guess that there are at least seven vacant lots a year sold to out of province sledders which is another 1 million dollars more or less dumped into the local economy. I would further guess that there are at least four new homes a year constructed for out of province sledders as vacation homes. At an average cost of construction in the neighbourhood of $300,000 to $400,000 per home that is another 1.4 million dollars more or less bringing the grand total to 8.1 million dollars more or less that sledders contribute to the local economy on an annual basis. My impression from the time I have spent in Valemount is that a vast majority of the local residents realize this and thus are always very welcoming to sledders.
