i am putting in a rk tek head soon and want to make sure its running right. i have found this document () re setting a jetting baseline using spark plug color and piston wash. though i do have a koso egs on my sled, can anyone give me a link or explain how to tune carbs using exhaust gas temps?

thanks

follow the recommendations of rkteck, let them know where you ride, it will get you real close, with no head ache or burn down,

why make it more complicated than it has to be.

I jetted mine the way RK told me to and it runs good. Clutching is another thing to do the way RK tells you to do!

Tune the carbs using plug color and piston wash, then the egt gage will let you know if something goes out of whack. The egt gage on my 07 600 RMK doesn't even have any numbers only indication lights, works great!

thanks EGT's are not absolute - it is best to read piston wash and plug color to establish a baseline. If both are good, make note of what your exhaust temps are at varying loads and throttle openings. Once you have installed the new bolt on goodies, you can somewhat determine if you are lean or rich. It is easy to be fooled by EGT's, as temps actually go down during detonation. Another thing to consider is that exhaust probes and guages can vary in caliberation, and each manufacturer has a specific distance from the piston where the probe(s) are to be placed. I hope this clarifies things somewhat, and explains the importance of reading plugs and piston wash. Oh, one other thing - keep your oil anf fuel consistant (no brand switching), as this can affect the readings.

ok will make sure i still use plug color to establish the baseline and just use the egt sensor to watch temps on the trails on the way up to the mountains?

Here is a link to establishing baseline's for EGT's. This information is written by digatron tech support specifically for sleds, but the basic procedure applies to all EGT gauges the same. The links attached to this article have some really good information on plug reading etc. Be careful using piston wash as it take a long time to develop, like hours or days, so you are better off to conduct plug readings to set a safe baseline, then adjust based on wash and feel down the road, as you develop a comfort level with the sled.
