I have an 08 XP 800, no electric start. Every thing is fine at idle but as soon as you start to rev it up the electrical power drops in the whole sled, lights go dim etc and when you check it it's only making 4 to 6 volts. As it comes back don to an idle it comes back to 13 to 14 volts. I'm thinking voltage regulator but the dealers I've talked to say they never sold one so it's not a common thing. Just wonderin if anyone has run into this and has an idea what it is. I don't mind buying a regulator but I wanna make sure it's not the stador or something. The motor was just built as well, and it wasn't supposed to have had this problem prior to that.

there are a number of places the wireing can short out and give you this problem . wire harness going back to the rear tail lite assemble .the wire harness going to the speed sensor near rteh chain case area is a good place to start and also the grip warmers can short to ground and draw the juice down . the fact that it is there at idle means the systemis produceing and the drop when reved up likely only makes the short happen due to vibratiion .
if you pull the air box attached to the carbs you can see beter in towards the chain case .
disconnect the wire connector on the bars toeliminate the grips . if it is still there then you need to check out the first two i mentioned .

I had the rivet behind the chaincase rub through the plug there, and if I remember right I think that plug is from the stater? And if the motor was out that plug got touched. Mine had a factory "fix" of a big glob of silicone that fell out the first time I pulled my motor. Thats when I noticed the rivet had been rubbing the wire.
I dont know if I described this right Maxwell and Sledshed might be better at describing it?Pretty sure they know what I'm trying to say.

I did it the easy way I ripped the front cooler out on a rock then when I put the new cooler in I put the rivet in the other way so it doesnt rub. :p

It's not acting like a short though. It's very consistent, works perfect at idle, 13.5 volts or so and then as you start to rev it, it goes to 15 volts or so and then at the very same rpm it drops right to 4-5 volts and stays there. Not flickering at all the lights are just dim. In my experience, a short is inconsistent and results in the lights flickering etc. That being said, electrical can act in very strange ways so it could be, I'll check those areas, thanks guys.

it's almost definitely your hot grips shorted out. i'm guessing you have the "fancy" guages? (the version with two pushbuttons on the gauge, and there's nine heat settings instead of high, low, off, for your hot grips.) The current to the hot grips is controlled by the gage, and doesn't supply them with any power until the engine goes over 2000 rpm.

this is what i would check :)
