Electric start issue

I have 2012 renegade 800 and when i push the button nothing happens. If i take a screw driver and touch the two studs on the relay it will start. Do you guys think i need a new switch or starter relay? The battery is new and all the connections seem to be tight.

Starter relay gets negative from the ecm only when engine is not running .Positive when start button is pushed only. Easy to troubleshoot. Mine was ecm not providing negative to the relay.

I check both and are fine. I got it running and kept switching it into reverse in and out and worked everytime. Then i shut the sled off and won't turn over.

Did you put a voltmeter on the starter relay? Check if you get positive and negative when trying to start at the small wires.

ok. I need a starter switch it is faulty. Called skidoo and they want to sell the the housing for 240.00. Anyone know where you can buy just the micro switch?

If reverse works, It’s not the switch.

I unplugged the the wiring harness under the hood that goes to the start button and used a jumper wire and it starts. That why i believe my switch is faulty.

Can’t test it that way. Plug it back in . If reverse works, switch is good. Ecm will complete the ground to the relay if engine is not running. Switch will give it positive running or not.

I plugged it back in and it does go into reverse. You thinking ecm?

Ecm is not giving giving ground to starter relay if reverse works. Too much money to replace ecm. I used a princess auto start button attached to the riser to give it the 12v positive ( and a new permanent 12v ground) instead of the handle bar one.Reverse will work normal.

No pictures of it on sled yet. Sold the sled to the neighbor ( still working fine)

Sounds like you have a bad ground somewhere. I had to clutch start a sled all day a week ago and just cleaned up all connections the next day and it worked fine.

2012 renegade 800 my daughter had would go thru relays for some reason.
Replace the cheap relay and in business for awhile till next time.

Never did figure out why it went thru relays, Yes, ski doo parts.

Trace back the ground wires and ensure they are clean and tight.
