I've been on a sled twice in my life, both this year. First trip to Revy, anf second trip to Mcbride. I found the learning curve to be over 10x what I expected and that much more physical too.

The Mcbride trip ended poorly for me. I ended up having to make a climb that I couldn't pull off and crashed through the trees coming back down. It was a spot I shouldn't have been in and no one, including myself, is really to blame - we all talked about it and everyone there took a lesson home with them.

In the end, I pretty busted up. Of course, not as bad as some of you crazies out there, but I have bruised ribs, broken right hand, broken left arm, shattered left wrist, and worst of all was the tear in my brand new Klim jacket. :) Check out the hardware they put in my left wrist.

Ah dude shat happens when u party naked.

It could have happened to any one of us

One wrong trench and bucks ya the other way.

Look at t.j after we got u up.

He was lucky his sled came through the trees u hit.

He's a good rider but got bucked the wrong way.

He even had his sled deploy its safety airbag ( Haaaaaaaaaaaaaa just like a steering wheel air bag now that I think of it. ).

Should buff right out. We've all made some not so smart decisions out there. Get back at it next year, it won't hurt forever.

Actually that one might.

Classic! I wish I had a pic of him coming up the hill with those big orange wings.

It's not the injury so much as the type of riding. I think I'll probably get back on the horse next season, but I definately know that I better be in a lot better shape before I do. ...the average 80 year old could probably run circles around me most days.

WOW! You really were messed up!! I still have yet to hear the whole story of how you lost it to get hurt so bad. All I know is I'm glad I had my SPOT with me (even though mine wasn't really needed) to get the SAR chopper to get you out of there.
The drop in there wasn't pretty, but after myself and buddy shoveled it it probably would have been a better way to get out.
That was a challenging hill-especially if you were a little tired as it was a good fight right to the top. I wouldn't have wanted to hit it twice thats for sure.
Hopefully you heal up good and get back on it again next year.

The limit to my sledding ability in the mountains is absolutely my muscles. The good thing is that sledding has got me back into the gym from Fall through Spring.

For your second time sledding, it sounds like your group may have taken you somewhere you didn't need to be.

Maybe next time get a few days under your belt in Boulder...pick and choose what stuff you want to climb...there's lots of big hills for the more experienced guys to play on as well, so nobody gets bored. Best of all....you don't get busted up.

I agree DaveB.... I would never take someone somewhere (by reading the post) where they shouldnt be. But also knowing when to say "NO" as a newbie is a big part of the learning curve. Even if everyone is going there the other guys should have picked up on that. i often am out and will not take pokes at certian slopes and watch the group do it and I also take newbies out and ya its a little boring for me but at that time its not about what I want to do but making their day enjoyable

its an honest mistake. i catch myself doing it once in a while with a newbie. you are so comfortable with complex terrain you take them into some simple terrain but it is still not simple enough.

I dont know if i would consider the "butterfly" simple terrain for a newbie. Glad to hear you are healing up.

Totally agree with Dave. Either go somewhere that has good terrain for all riders in your group or your buds can suck it up and ride simpler terrain. afterall they are the ones who got you involved in the sport. and if that isnt a option then find new ridin partners that are understanding and have patience. funnest part of my day is seeing a newb doing awesome and grining ear to ear.

Sledding is too much fun to give it up after 1 bad incident. Hope you heal up quick and get back on the horse next season. I love my quadding too but its nothing compared to the learning curve and reward that sledding offers. Good luck bud!

Sounds like your friends need to learn that beginners can't go the places they can. Maybe they should have taken you to some easier spots so you could learnt to ride first before you needed to do stuff with consequences attached. Kind of dickish if you ask me. Just saying....

This actually happened close to a month ago and I was reluctant to post anythng about it just so my buds didn't get flamed for it.

I'd say it was beginner-ish once you're down there down there, but getting in and out was pretty terrifying for me. It really was an honest mistake. We thought we were still within the boudaries shown on the map at the cabin which clearly specified everything as beginner/intermediate. We talked about it afterwards and how we would have done things differently, so we all walked away with a lessone learned.

What we didn't talk about was what we would do if we were to accidentally end up in a similar situation. In that situation, I figure they should have probably accepted the fact that I was no going to make it out on my first attempt and dircted me to dig my sled in near the top instead of attempting to decsend and take another poke at it. Of course, hind site is 20-20.
