my sled has no guages anymore. no warning lights etc..

but i would like to be able to tell if its going to overheat.

can i buy the stock doo temp guage and just plug it in

(2001 summit 600standard)

it does have the sending unit on the head.

or does anyone know any good aftermarket guage setups that come with probes or utilize stock sending unit

I think you would replace the sending unit in the head (if not working), loop it into a 12vDC circuit to warning lamp at least. Better safe than sorry. Cost very little too. JMO

The gauge will plug in to the stock wiring harness but you also need the sending with the gauge the stock one is for the idiot light only

Yes, what Murminator said. You need the jumper to run the gauge, the other one is for the idiot light. Doo does make one, they are about $100-150 from what I have seen in the past. They might not list one for your sled if it did not come from the factory with one, so you would have to order one from the Grand Touring sled. Not a big deal though. You can run an autometer gauge if you use a rectifier and wire it in (they need the voltage converted) and you can buy an inline sensor adaptor (did this once, it works fine). Koso makes a nice water temp gauge too, but not sure if it is AC or DC and if it comes with the rectifier. If not, the rectifiers are about a dollar at Radio Shack or B&E Electronics in Calgary. Here are some links:

in the snowmobile gauges section, there are 2 gauges, one a round temp sensor and one LCD. The LCD is nice because the temp range is higher, but it takes batteries. The inline water temp sensor adapters are in the accessories section on page 4, you just need to know your hose diameter.
Here is the autometer link: you will need a rectifier for these

The digital ones are some of the best to use as they have the largest reading span, a lot of the eletric and mechnical ones only read to 260 degrees F, which is 126 C. On a good long pull the gauge may be buried off the scale the whole time.

And one more that I think is worth trying out: (about a 1/3 of the way down the page)
Tools & Gauges

Hoep that helps.

Ski-doo does/did make a temp guage conversion kit.... It was complete with guage, and sending unit and i think connectors and possibly even a harness..... My '99 i used the guage, and sending unit and basically just plugged them in using the wiring for the temp lite.... Same could be done with gauge, sending unit and some wire..... Very basic set-up.... You might check with canadian powersports or punchbuggies as they prolly have used guages kicking around for cheap????

yeah punchbuggies seems to be running out of snowmobile stock. there right by my shop.

so i can get the guage and sending unit off ebay no problem.

so then 2 wires would just have to go to a power source? grnd +

and then 2 go to the sending unit?

i no longer having stock wiring i just have a + power take off.

You can't just plug them into the regular temp sender as it is a different temp sender for the gauge vs the light. The light temp sender is just an off/on switch, as soon as it gets too hot, it trips, grounds and the light comes on. The sender for the gauge reads and varies the voltage/current with the different temps. At least this is the way it was on mine and my dad's sleds. The sender is the key, the gauge and wiring is the easy part. Yes, the power hook ups can go anywhere to a hot wire and ground.

Ski Doo has them for sure, but you're probably cheaper getting an aftermarket one, seeing as you can't plug it into the original wiring harness anyway.

Coolant temp and ambient temp

They've been on there for 3000kms, in all conditions (mostly mountain riding), never had a problem

I was in the "stuff by doo talkers" section of the Dootalk.com website. He had a listing in there for the gauges. I just looked and it seems he does not have the gauges listed in there anymore, but the same guy is selling the billet bar risers in the same section of that website, his name is shown as "idooski".

if you log into that site, you can send him a message and ask him if he still makes the gauges

A Digatron is another option. Sure like mine. Set your own parameters and warnings. Also records everything to look at later for tuning. Watch multiple items at once.....egt's, H2O, tach/jackshaft.....
