That's a whole new thread right there.....and boy could I tell some stories....

As for the issue on RESPECT, do you realize that schools are now teaching character education. Why? Because they aren't learning this at home anymore. And that right there is why people don't help others anymore. Maybe the police should be teaching some character education to their force.

You are on to something there. The police have been hiring from the same generational pool that has produced the selfish, lazy, self-entitled bunch we have all had to put up with at some time or another. Look at how many cops quit or get fired now compared to generations past. Part economy, and part work ethic, I would say.

I had a similar experience involving city police and by-law officer......I was doing pretty much the same thing as the Doc, plowing neighbors driveways and sidewalks of the people I knew and talked too, asked anyone shovelling if they wanted me to help out (didn't want a PO neighbor knocking on my door sayin you scraped my concrete...etc) so I was dilligent to get permission first. Anyway as i said driveways and sidewalks, there was a few occasions that a drift would be in front of someones driveway and I would push it onto the property to get it off the street, I had gotten a few tickets from by-law in the past and so did my neighbor we both lived on the crner opposite eachother and had not gotten to the snow in a timely fashion and got the big ticket( we both worked out of town and thye wifes never shovel). The* one time I actually had a problem was first with bylaw, I came home to a notice on my door to remove the snow so i promptly started the plow going and just as I had finished my own by-law shows up and starts writing a ticket to my neighbor sitting in his truck writing and I go by and start removing the snow, well the guy comes out and says what are you doing you can't do that blah blah blah........spouts of the snow has to be shovelled and that plow will damage city property etc.... so I said sorry about that I have the bylaw and now where does it say I couldn't use a plow, and I said how does the city remove it then, he says they can remove it how they see fit it's there property blah blah blah.. so he asks me where i live and my name* etc.. I give him* no further response and continue to finish the sidewalk and then the driveway he is still parked in front of the house and then goes to the neighbors door with the ticket.....then the city plow shows up, the guy gets out and says which sidewalk...I go talk to him and said I was just about to clear the rest of the culdesac sidewalks as well, and the bylaw guy goes off on me* but the plow guy says well I'll just continue on back down the road* and have a nice day...I continue to plow the neighbors walks (even the ones I didn't* get permission from) next thing I know city cop shows up and says whats the problem and are you giving the bylaw a hard time etc..... I explained to him the situation asked him if I could go to my house and show him the copy of the bylaw my past tickets for not clearing the snow etc....he says sure, so i go get the info and he's over talking to the bylaw I come out and we had a decent conversation about what had just happened and my understanding of the bylaw, and also that I take full responsibility for driving my ATV on city common property etc......well the cop said sorry but I will give you a warning about the ATV, and thanks for being a good neighbor but what your doing in the eyes of the law is wrong so you have been warned, Have a nice day! (Cops and by-law are just people who have a job to do, some use there discretion in a manner fitting to the issue and some don't). my neighbor did get the ticket but took it to city hall and it was taken care of.

Ive had a few customers with the same issue in Calgary.... It can take DAYS for the plows to make it out to the suburbs, so people take out there quads, help the city out, and end up getting fined for it. If anyone recalls, it was actually one of Rick McIvors good points when he was running for mayor. He wanted to allow use of ATVs to facilitate with plowing. Its unfortunate that even when there ARE solutions, some governing bodies are too stubborn or too keen to make a buck to even consider it...

If a city doesn't make any money from it or a business thinks they are losing money because of it, then the powers that be won't allow it.

The city bylaw against general public is to reduce the chances a good samaritan clips a fire hydrant, light pole, water service valve to a house, busts up the walk way with their machine. If someone damages one of these, who fixes it and who'll pay for the repairs? Such accidents can and have happened. I'm all for helping out neighbors, but what would you say if your good samaritan neighbor just smashed up the fire hydrant and you have water pouring all over your house/yard? Or if they clipped your water service valve in your driveway and you no longer have water to your house? Still thank him for the help?

It`s the same BS out here in Saskatchewan.... I live in a bedroom community north of Saskatoon on a cul de sac. Was out plowing the snow which NEVER gets done out here and ended up getting stopped by the local RCMP. He basicly told me he would impound my quad and fine me if I choose to continue. So much for helping the fellow neighbor out in the winter out here... The RCMP also stated that I had to pull my trailer onto my driveway on order to load my atv. If i was caught loading on the street that he would fine me and may even impound it. Seems like we have the same community spirit out here as St. Albert....

Valid point, its just always hard to see those who are trying to help be reprimanded. You just always figure if your intentions are in the right place, you cant go wrong, but in this instance, it bit him back pretty hard.

I actually witnessed this on the way to Canadian Tire on Saturday. I didn't realize the one guy was arrested. What a joke... All the more reason that I want to move out of this sh!thole town. I've only known one decent cop in this town that did his job well and was easy to deal with and reasonable...

One story I read suggested the doctor has a lawyer involved to help him deal with the RCMP.

If you witnessed this and feel the RCMP were acting inappropriately, I urge you to contact Dr. Cooper at his office. His lawyer may want to talk with you.

A Facebook community page has been created for those who want to show their support.

You do know your "CC" is a WATER SHUT OFF. You can damage it all you want, all it does is prevent turning off/on your water, it won't cut off your water by hitting it. Second of all, they are ALWAYS below the driveway or grass to prevent damage, and that is just a cover and nothing more the shut off is well below ground away from danger. O infact, the one for my house is below my neighborers driveway should I be concerned?

My driveway is over 20 years old and is cleaned with a skidsteer and no damage whatseover, also clean the city sidewalk with it to. And your ALLOWED to do that with a skidsteer FYI. A quad with a blade won't damage a feather.

What is someone hits a light pole driving? So what? And good luck damaging the fire hydrant as said, props to you if you can actually do more then scuff the paint. It is a MAJOR problem to cover a fire hydrant with snow, so they always have to be clearly visable, no reason to hit them.

It is just so stupid. I clean my street and alley all the time with the skidsteer to make it easier for me and the neighborers, because the city is useless when a plow does come by they just push a tiny bit of loose stuff to the sides and it does nothing. But if cops are getting like this i'm tempted to stop. I will just start phoning the city 100 times a day and tell my neighborers the same, I don't want to get in trouble!

The city doesn't know how to do snow removal to save their life. It's frigging sad when you see 90% of private lots all cleaned and the city hasn't even plowed the major roads. Last night was the first time I seen a plow so far actually plowing and not just driving around. This is the first real snow in a lot of years and they still can't get it right.

gotta love rural Alberta

all the cops are worried about here is tint... they could care less about what else is going on

Why would you go after real criminals when you can pull over law abiding people doing nothing wrong and ticket them for tint? You know tint kills people everyday right?

Almost got a ticket once for my license being cracked! I'm glad I got the warning, who knows what could of happened?!?!

If the machine is properly insured would insurance coverage not extend to possible property damage due to use of said machine????

Same argument could be made for a snowblower, bobcat, kuboda ect...

If an agreement is in place then it constitutes a verbal contract and the property owner is accepting possible liability for services redered, if they are not willing to accept said liability then no services are to be redered and they can shovel thier own damn sidewalk. A written contract can direct liability to the service provider (prime contractor) in the case of any work performed on private property the owner is the default prime contractor unless a contractural agreement indicates otherwise. similar to good samaritan type common law for First-Aid providers also a volunteer position.

by the logic indicated below you should never extend help to a neighbor, friend or family member due to issues of possible liability, sounds very American to me eh....

Not that I listen to the bear anymore because they are idiots but yesterday morning caught a bit. And they were saying how people shouldn't complain and the city was plowing henday, whitemud, yellowhead first. Funny how I was on whitemud at midnight on saturday and didn't see a single truck! Yet anywhere I went I seen private lots being cleaned. They don't even know that henday is done by private contractor not the city, and it's funny how quickly the henday is always done(i've NEVER had a complaint about hendays condition). The city has a lot of road to do, so they better have a lot of equipment and stop with the fawking excuses. People do their own stuff because the city is incompetent in doing THEIR job.
