Pulled the drivers wheel bearing.. Best guess as to where the noise is coming from..fail! bearings spins like new. But with the drivers axel out I tried turning the pinion yoke. Very rough and hard to turn. No play in it, up/down in/ out? But id say a Bearing is gone in there! Great!

40000k ago Dodge did the pinion seal for the second time.... I'm betting it was not done that well or with a torq wrench

Either they had it too loose , too tight , or the oil got too low the first time.

But 40000 km since seal it would have shown up sooner , like 4000 km seeing as it turns all the time.

Ur gears are ok I bet as long as it don't size up. Still have to take crown out ect to get pinion out to change bearings.

Makes one wonder why dodge doesn't have locking hubs like ford does. Much less wear on the front end. I saw a dodge half ton pile up a rear pinion bearing last week. Took the rear driveshaft with it and busted the casting on the rear diff case around the flange. 2year old truck with 30k on it. Are pinion/diff problems common on dodges?

You mean " problems common on dodges"

I'm starting to sway that way. I've pretty much changed it all now except for the steering box... Which is next I'm sure! Then tranny again!

I put the Dynatrac free spin kit on my dodge old style locking hub awesome kit easy to install and in summer unlock hub and axle shafts and drive shaft dont turn. bearings are cheaper when it comes time to rebuild. Abit pricey up front but worth it if you plan on keeping truck. If your running bigger tires bearings are further apart thats stock ones dont wear out as quick.

Those dynatracs are a sweet setup. Makes it like a 80's and up to mid 90's ford or chev with the Dana 60. A little more maintenance but tough as shark $hit. The locking hub and unit bearings ford uses are close behind but still not as tough.
A co-worker put 5K into the front end of his dodge 3/4 ton last December . Everything including an upgraded steering box from Delphi. Then his brother in law borrowed the truck and toasted the tranny, another 5K.
Today it wouldn't start for his wife, he says its been having electrical issues now for the last two months. All this in a 2007 with 140km on it. Great engine, lousy wrapper!!
