Do You have Avalanche Training?

Took in in mid-winter from Lori at Zacs, very valuable course. Glad I took it. Never new I would ever have to put what I learned into a real life situation. Recommend it to anyone to take.

8 of 11 riders in our group have the avy training from Zacs and there is heavy pressure on the last three. The same 8 have fist aid cpr training through work and 7 of us have ABS bags. My first aid kit can secure a broken femur and maybe one more bone. We use UHF radios, Sat. phone, gps with us also and emergency numbers in Sat. phone bag. Tow rope and extra clothes along with emergecy blanket. I also have a winter survival course but that was taken a while back but still remember basics for shelter building. We have a good range of experience and training but there is always room for more training or refresher courses. I am sure there are a lot of trained people within each group.

My family and I were signed up to take the AST level 1 course with Lori from Zacs Tracks in April 18 & 19 but unfortunately it was canceled due to low enrollment. Anyway, we will be taking the next available course when ever it's offered.

I just have a word of advice to those of you who think it's too expensive....and letting that be the deciding factor in not taking the course. You bought the sled, the gear, the truck and trailer, the gas and oil and the mods.....what is $350, 2 nights stay in a motel and some meals and two days of your time to invest??? I think it's a SMALL price to pay when you have the knowledge and the piece of mind, and who knows? You may be called upon to save someone in need.....

from the time i signed up for the course and it took place, i was riding and a guy i was with got buried. he made it out ok for the most part, couple broken ribs, lost a pack, and killed his ego. scared the sh!t out of us, especially him!! then when i took the course it all made sense, i could totally see why the hill slid that we were on. i'd recommend an avy course to everyone.

the course i took was through the university of calgary. it was a bit broader of a goup as far as some people were skiers, snowboarders and a few sledders. but, the snow pack (or lack thereof this year) is the same no matter what you are riding on. the course still consisted of a day of lecture, and a day on the mountain.

i can't say for sure it has saved my life, but i make much more informed decisions about where and when i ride now.

yup!ast 2,back country servival and wilderness,level 1 first aid,travel indorsements,C-spine control,& ten+ yrs in back country observing the terrain,snow and all other varables.shadowed pro patrols for avy and blasting exp.......

I think everyone should get some kind of course, but most important is time in the mountains,EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING

I've taken first aide training so many times it makes me sick. ( Company requirement) but that being said I am happy to say that they are wasting money on my training. Never had to use it, hope that I never have to. Sorry to here that you had to use your Avy training. I too plan on taking Lori's course. I hope it is the best money I have ever wasted.

at least you are looking. I took Dacry Swederis classroom course. was goo info but I think that Lori has a lot more to offer. If you truely are the mountain rider that I know you are you will go out of your way to take this course. Read my mountain sledders prayer in my sig

Took it a couple years ago with Lori ... half our group has ABS bags,spot and everyone has radios first aid etc. :d

We have never been in an avy and would like to keep it that way!!

I've heard great things about Lori's course, but there is always different styles and alternatives. Ryan puts on a great course, and have heard great feedback on the experience!

Took it quite a few years ago with Zacs (approx 7yrs) - pretty good course overall. I am sure it has been developed even more since then. Taking the course opens your eyes for sure.

In the past at the shop we have hosted Lori. If there is enough interest we will be happy to provide the space for another group. Our position is everybody that rides in the mountains should have some form of training. Don't forget you are taking a course for your friends, don't be selfish. It would be extremely gratifying to save a friends life if the need should arise.

I dont have it but, if some one will put on a course my son and i will both attend , As last year was our frist year to the mountains , and we dont want to be over confident , but as well if were trained it helps , we plan more trips next year , and would love more info and training , so add Pete and Peter to the list
