Was too cheap to buy air frames plus I wanted to have them shorter than what they build. Used 1" square aluminum along the tunnel and drilled into stock edge rail. Used stainless pipe for the cross members. No welding everything rivets together. Time will tell but feel very strong when I boondock in the garage.

I was wondering about the grip part too. The outer rail is perfect which is were my feet are 90% of time. Won't be hard to install screws in the bars if I have too. Unless there are other suggestions. Weren't the original air frames bare?

From the sounds of things the bars will spin with screws in them or are they anchored at one end?

I would imagine that he threw a rivet in the cross members. Even without screws the bars would spin. Would suck to pin the throttle and have your feet try to slide to the back on a set of rollers.

Hopefully they hold up well. I know that stock outer strip is bent on my crossfire, and I don't think the holes drilled in it will help at all. But I guess for the price it's worth a shot since it all gets hacked off anyway to put on new boards

You can buy the plastic rivet on ones that skins use.
They went away from ice screws on the cross pieces.

Good think you are keeping true to the redneck theme on your sled, looks good and if you gotta tow me those stainless bars will make a great place to hook the rope!

If the bars are just loose in their holes then they might roll on you until they ice up. Might have to use alum instead and tack weld them or you can drill through the bottom of your 1" and into the stainless (on the tunnel side) and put a rivet (or screw) in there to keep them from rolling. Royal also sells some plastic gripper things that you can bolt on, like the skinz ones but with little pyramids on them, they work well. I agree that the outer rail will not slip too much on the boots, those things tear the hell out of your soles. Don't forget to drill some water drain holes at the front of the 1" and in the outer rail (on the bottom obviously), otherwise with all those cross bar holes in there, the supports will fill with water and snow quickly and you'll be packing more sprung weight around all the time. Otherwise - GOOD WORK!
