Disconnecting linkage pin?

So I got a repalcement leg for my evinrude 115 v4, this is probably the best video for remove and install.

But my question is, why does the linkage need to be removed? It's not like connected to anything moving

Im no expert Doug, but I believe the shift action is in the leg and one of the long rods that you see as he pulls the leg off. The pin he takes off would be the connection to that long rod to the transmission. My best guess.

If its a used leg make sure to replace the water pump and it would b a good idea to reseal it

I bought a used/rebuilt leg from Robins Marine in BC. I also watched a couple other vids and it makes sense now

And make sure you have water muffs or submerge the leg before you fire it up the first time. Made that mistake when I was 16.

Putting the linkage pin back in, is proving to be a major pita!!! Think I’ll have to call a friend for help tomorrow

Rebuilt leg is not putting water into the engine and out the telltale
Even too the leg off and sprayed water up the tube and it came out of the block
Put the leg back on again and still no water up

Thinking of putting the old leg on and seeing if it's an impeller issue?

Or I guess I could take the rebuilt one apart and see if it was assembled properly

sounds like the rebuilt one hasn't been assembled properly, the waterpump impeller could be an old one and the fins might be inflexible or they forgot the key inbetween the shaft and impeller

Or you might not have the waterpump tube in the right place going into the motor

I'm pretty sure it the water pump missing the keyway. I'll drop the leg when I get home from work today and take apart the water pump.

I'll also send the company a text and let them know what's happening. $1100.00 for a rebuilt leg, I thought would include everything rebuilt.

If I have issues, I'll send you my number and would be happy to drink a bottle of rum one day with you, for your advice
