I will take that beer. News this morn says the light crude is starting to evaporate. When this is over the gulf will be in great shape. No sleep loss here.

The news spoon fed you that "everythings all rosy" bullsh!t so this diaster would not reflect poorly on the US oil and the US economy. Hope it was a nice thought while it lasted - oil is now washing up onshore.

"A race is on to contain the catastrophe, with oil already reaching at least four shorelines.

Cleanup crews found oil washing ashore at Whiskey Island in Louisiana's Terrebonne Bay, west of the Mississippi Delta. Crude has also been found at the Chandeleur Islands and Port Eads in the state, as well as on Dauphin Island in Alabama."

They have also discovered an underwater heavy oil slick at least 10 miles long. Doubtful that the Gulf will be in great shape once this is all over.....

What bugs me is they are sinking the oil with dispersant's where it can never be cleaned up and will surely enter the sea food ecosystem.(out of sight, out of mind mentality)

MSNBCTwenty years after the Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil in Alaska's Prince William Sound, oil persists in the region and, in some places, "is nearly as toxic as it was the first few weeks after the spill," according to the council overseeing restoration efforts.

"This Exxon Valdez oil is decreasing at a rate of 0-4 percent per year," the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council stated in a report marking Tuesday's 20th anniversary of the worst oil spill in U.S. waters. "At this rate, the remaining oil will take decades and possibly centuries to disappear entirely."

Scary huh

Sounds like a corporate bigwig was like "Ahhh man we're totally fugged... Let's look around my office and see what we can come up with"
....... Pause....
Person 1: "Let's throw crumpled lamp shades!"
2: "Let get leather chairs"
Bigwig: "You guys are both stupid - GOLF BALLS are obviously the answer..."

MY GOD! What the frick?! Like that's what I would throw down an oil spewing well... Golf balls. I didn't know they were good for flow stopping qualities - learn something new every day!

Oil companies worry about profits, and BP makes soo much money that they won't even notice the costs unlike the people that are losing their paychecks right now. And their high priced lawyers will out gun any claims made by regular people... Not to mention the environment and wildlife. Sad when golf balls and shredded tires are part of the plan.

I haven't heard anyone mention what happens when hurricane season starts...

BP's daily profits dwarf the daily cost of spill response, and at the current rate, the company could cover the entire cost of cleanup thus far in just under four days of profits.

Good points Pipes and I will add that if the average joe, or tree hugger would take the time to do any REAL research, the industry as a whole has come leaps and bounds (much to our dismay at times) over the past years. The days of tugging rigs in and out with Cats is almost non-existent. Same goes for pipeline work, very seldom are we even allowed to work in the mud for fear of damaging shallow topsoil and the fears of admixing.

I will be the first one to complain that some of these rules have gone overboard, but they carry with them the other rules and regulations that do make sense...

At least once a month I do however long for the good ole days...

seems like you work south of hwy 1. seen a lot of riggs and equipment towed behind cats north of hwy 16, biggest part of province.

Both right...Based out of Medicine Hat and we do tons on the Suffield Block, major enviro issues there...if the tires on your truck make a 1" rut in the mud they want us off, then they race around in their tanks and leave 1-2' tank tracks all over.

We work lots of grassland, minimal disturbance, dry or frozen only...

BREAKING NEWS NOW

On CNN live BP has admitted that the release of oil is more than they first had said

Well no ch!t sherlock....

Oil spill worse than estimated, BP concedes - thestar.com

Yeah, lots of us said this all along. No one drills a $3 billion dollar well for 5,000 bpd. Production needs to be way more than that, otherwise it would take 20.5 yrs to pay the well off at that production and current prices (assuming linear rate of production, not including loss of well pressure and make things slow down...). Good luck selling that BS to anyone in the industry - BP thinks the entire world is fawking stupid.

Yeah Just like all the spills and line breaks around here.........when's the last time you seen a pipeline that only held 1200 liters...........what a joke........... nobody drills a deep water well thatisn't targeted to be a big producer...... and at 5000 BPD at that...it would have to have a 1 in front of that 5......or a zero on the end to make it a big big producer....... I'm guessing that the 5000 # is for all the shallow well guys out there that would say yeah that's about right.........I really hope this thing gets resolved fast for the sake of everyone.....it's by far the biggest enviromental disaster yet......and should not be downplayed by anyone.

There is a failed cement plug acting as a partial choke, a failed bridge plug acting as a partial choke and the collapsed riser and drill pipe acting as a partial choke additionally this well hasn't been stimulated yet so what it would've be capable of flowing with abslolutley no restriction after stimulation is a lot more than what it is capable of now. Still 5000bbls is a pretty conservative estimate for the flow they had coming out of that 21" riser even with the gas making it look worse than it actually is, I would hope that they assume that 70,000 bbls is the output and prepare for the worst case scenario. That is truly one of the worlds most beautiful places, especially the reefs around the keys.

human cancer theory....

we destroy the natural ballance of all things, as our populations grow we take over more and more natural enviroment and convert it to suit our needs & wants.

We modify our environment to suit our own desires rather than adapt to our our environments.....

Darwinism.... rabbits have long ears because only those who could hear preditors well lived long enough to reproduce....each species has characteristics which allow them to survive in their ecosystem...

Then we come along and evolve to the point that there is no need for us to adapt... we adapt our environments to suit.

We are the earths cancer......and there is no cure...

Cheers:d:beer:

I don't think they'll stop their core business model for any significant length of time, they'll just be drilling under a lot more scrutiny. Most oil companies that size operate under many different names not just one, Talisman is a spin off of BP for example. They'll keep drilling and keep producing in one form or another, they will need to pay for their share of the clean up. Keep in mind that there will be at least 8 huge multinational companies on the hook for the clean up. BP, Transocean, Schlumberger, Cameron and at least one insurance underwriter for each of the corporations. Lloyds of London is more than likely BP's insurance co and they underwrite many other insurance companies, Lloyds will increase their underwriters fee just a little for all of them and they in turn will add just a little to all their clients policies. In effect everybody who has insurance that is underwritten by Lloyds in the end will be helping to pay for this, this could be you or me or anyone really. The trillion dollars this clean up will cost over the next 4 decades has to come from somewhere, you can bet the big corporations will find a way to minimize their share.
