no it is not always the truck drivers fault, but when 9 out of 10 semi's coming at you are hugging the center line with the front tire, there dam rear trailer tires are over the line. so in essence they are using there 12 ft lane plus 2 feet of the oncoming lane, I am of the mind they are causing most of the accidents. see them passing on blind hills, corners etc. good god the crap you are hauling won't go bad, it has been sitting for days maybe weeks!!!

and it Is worse at night, dub azz's are now over the center line, cargo hanging off the deck, bouncing around on the pavement.
they need way more enforcement on these dam highways, transports and pickups both. fine the driver and the company they work for, and where they are hauling to. :rant:

There is more to 881 than crapy drivers, I drove that road for a year to Devo Energy and we have a lot of other work in the area. Sharp bends and no shoulders on the road. WhenI was at Devon there were 14 fatalities in 6 months. We stopped our project to discuss this with all the crews.

My cousin was on the build of the road and EVERYONE involved knew it was going to be a killer! It is just to narrow for it's intended use! There was the oportunity to lower and widen the road but due to cost the present design is what you get, may the dumb azzes that made the choice rot in hell. It is amazing the amount of people we are willing to kill in the name of oil. It is no secret that the old Hwy 63 (Been driving that piece of crap since 85) and now 881 are the deadliest roads in Alberta.
Everyone during construction of the road knew the size of loads that were going to be transported yet to save a few dollars in the grand scheam a crap road was built. You listen to every owner on site preach safety and at times we are forced to let employees go to follow site policy. Yet there is no issue letting people die on poorly designed highways to come to work on the very same sites. These companies have the power to loby government but I guess when you are in bed together there is no need to be accountable. It is sickening to watch.
881 is not a highway to speed on or follow to close, you have to be alert and sharp to stay alive on 881. It is sad to hear of another lost life on that road no matter who's fault it is and even sadder that the real issue will not be addressed due to cost. More of us oil monkeys will be left to die instead.

Bravo!! Great post, They should be putting crosses at sites where people have died, then send the area politicians through to view, look like a forest i'm sure

Excellent point about the design of that stretch of 881. Last year, a cop was fuelling up beside me at Conklin Corners and I asked him why there wasn't more enforcement out with all the traffic. He told me that he wasn't going to pull somebody over, end up blocking half the highway because there no shoulder and risk causing an accident.

I drive from bc to lac la biche on a 2wk rotation. Trucks are definitely a hazard, they travel at 110-120 on the flats and down hill, 80-90 uphill.

Its a pita to get by them Which forces some drivers to take chances. I get paid to travel so no big deal for me to follow at 90.

Years ago trucks were limited to 90km

Qe2 is just as bad, friggen trucks trying to pass each other for 5kms backing up traffic 10-15 cars or more.





In europe all trucks travel 90km in the right lane and do not pass each other, i saw lines of 20 trucks following nose to tail When i travelled there.

Oil companies pay SFA in royalties, why don't they buck up and twin the road? It's their equipment getting smashed in the wrecks anyway. Make it a private toll road.

With speed variations of 40km/hr every 10km yes. If they would travel at 90km/hr no issues.

I just can't believe you don't keep a steady speed of 90km/h when you're 100,000 kgs or more.

Why are they passing each other then if they're happily cruising along ? A lot of trouble is the result of trucks trying to pass each other, especially on hills, truck A capable of 90 kmh, truck B capable of 92 kmh, but he still pulls into fast lane and gibbles up the whole system. But the vehicles who are capable of cruising consistently at 110, up or down, they're the problem ?

he was stating the trucks are a hazard because 4 wheelers have to take chances passing them.

the majority of the crashes are 4 wheelers taking stupid chances. I'm not defending the actions of every dumbass move pulled by truck drivers. compare those idiots to the amount of poor decisions made by 4 wheelers. the trucks are vastly outnumbered. this is a fact

Agree. Never used to see semi passing semi much. Now as was stated if one semi going 2 km\hr slower on hwy 2 the other semi jams up the passing lane for a 5 minute pass.

never before were there so many companies that dropped their max speed to 90 km/hr. for safety

By the sounds of it your not worth the time to explain why large trucks have a bit of a variance in forward motion, or why governing trucks at 90 km/h, and a line of 20 nose to tail would cause MORE problems then it would solve.

Maybe all those pita trucks should be banned from the road. friggen trucks

That said, I really doubt most drivers (4 wheelers) would believe what us truck drivers see...things have gotten much worse with the distracted driving.

The notion that truckers are causing all these accidents is a ridiculous thought and statistics show big trucks cause only a only a small amount of accidents, far less than 10% IIRC.

Regarding the OP about a guy driving into a wide super load... that's called "Darwinism" the cull of the stupid. Guy was probably watching a movie or on facebook.

I swear you guys that don't drive truck would be absolutely amazed what your fellow drivers are doing, it's crazy what guys will do to get in front of an empty Super B that is traveling the speed limit or a bit more... Crazy.

this tread was about friggin truck drivers driving there friggin trucks over the centerline on 881, nothing about 1/2 tons etc, that is for another thread. seems like a lot of defensive truck drivers on here. if you don't drive 881, this is not about you, or if you don't drive with left front wheel on center line then this has nothing to do with you.. if you have an opinion as to why this is happening then please let us in on the reason. If you are one who drives like this on 881 or any other road give your head a shake.

what I see is they don't give a s-it about anyone else but themselves. I see a few phone calls being made. and I have to say there are some very good truck driver's out there, just trying to make a living and wanting to get home safe
