Most hotels have more than the usual buffet. My personal experiences, i dont care for the buffets other than the fresh fruit, and a few slices of toast which you cant go wrong with, other than that the buffet was ok. Got to leave room for some Rum;) You are right about taking spices as the food can be rather bland. Pastas were usually pretty good. The other restuarants on site usually have better quality of food, the down side of the restaurants is that you have to make reservations in advance (try to make them the day you arrive), the menu is usually limited to about 5-10 items, and they dont open until 5-6pm. And there usually is the snack bar that serves the usual burgers, fries, and nachos till the wee hours of the morning. I also felt alot safer in Cuba than I did in the Mayan, maybe it was the resort.

I went to Cuba over Xmas 2008. All in all was a pretty good trip. We stayed in Varadero. I found Cuba to be more of a culture shock than Mexico, like mentioned the people here are extremely poor, the country is extremely poor. Its very beautiful though, the beaches/water, etc are much nicer. Although depending on the resort, you may find the resorts to be a bit outdated, and the food to be mediocre, but the people are very nice! Its not like Mexico where there are lots of bars and restaurants to go to outside of your resort, you basically stick to lounging around in your resort/beach , or you go on tourist trips and do the market thing. We did the Jeep Tour and the Havana Tour. We did the CUC currency as well. The Jeep tour was teh biggest culture shock of all, you go through some villages that still use horses for means of transportation. We brought lots of tinkets down with us too to tip our maid with, and to also give some of the kids in the villages on the Jeep tour. We filled our suitcases with toiletries, clothes and makeup, jewelery I no longer used, etc. Our maid absolutely loved us, and she even wrote us a letter how appreciative she was of all the stuff we brought. Its a very good feeling :) I enjoyed Cuba, its different then Mexico that's for sure, but its sort of refreshing. Hope you enjoy your trip! As far as weather.. we went in December and we had only about a day and a half of cloudy/rainy weather. the rest was sunny +35
