Wondering about what the cross hatch on a nikasil plated cylinder will look like. I'm a heavy duty mechanic, but never have dealt with this type of cylinder before. Will it look the same, depth, pattern, as a normally honed cylinder?

Any help is much appreciated.

I'll try to get some good pics posted tomorrow morning with the wife's camera

Yeah the cross hatching is the same. Nikasil is just a coating, just look for peeling, usually around the transfer ports, it's super tough and if it peels off it makes a big mess.

It's not peeling but there isn't any crosshatch left on the cylinder.... Can it be re honed or is that a bad idea?

If you're replacing pistons then yes you need to hone the cylinders. If you've just looked into the motor, through an exhaust port for instance, and noticed this then no you don't need to pull it apart and re-hone.

Yes you can have a Nikasil cylinder rehoned. I've had it done numerous times on different engines but i always make sure to freshen the rings at the same time for a good seal. Now i'm not quite sure but i don't think you can just do a crosshatch with a basic ball hone i think you need a diamond hone because of the surface hardness. Check with Mots or Cylcle Works to find out if you're thinking of doing it yourself. Higgins.

No a ball hone works fine. I've done it thousands of times. I was just throwing the peeling part in because I just did my rm250 cylinder and noticed it peeling on my transfer port. Always have to inspect them.

Thanks for the info.... The engine is already apart, lost 15 psi with the little bit I rode last year. Used sled and found air box full of dust, never knew to inspect it when I bought it. After I removed the engine, found lots of pieces of belts under it, and cord every where I think there are more miles on the sled then what it states on the odometer

Travel covers are cheap and that why our group put them on even on dry roads, spring time whatever, dust kills engines, and we all know sleds have minimal air filtration. As brought up by one guy that seems to be way smarter than then rest of us....:d
Dave, just wondering how many KMs the odometer has on it. btw hd mechanic here too!

The odometer says 1900ish miles, sled is from the US, and has the updated 08 engine. The dust that was in the air box was belt dust, and it is in the reed's as well. Looks like the foam wasn't sealing, as we all know that will happen on the REV. I did buy a cover for it before it was transported anywhere, especially on the trailer.

also take the outer airbox off the side panel and put something over the hidden holes.... thats where the belt dust gets in...... also snow dust will scar the pistions-cylinder walls..... snow dust gets in there too.... i bought water replent nylon from fabric land and works awsome.... put it on the hood holes too to keep snow out....

I was going to wrap a frog skin around the intake to the air box, to help prevent future issues, should work in my mind:rolleyes:
