I'm thinking of trying to make some cromoly running boards for my '04 summit this spring/summer. Has anyone worked with this? Is it easy to work with? I believe you have to use a tig (sp?) welder to work with it. I'm having major snow clumping issues with my Betterboards...which ironically aren't better than my stock ones.

Where can cromoly be purchased? I'd like to get this project started if it's going to be fairly reasonable/not too difficult to do. Any info would be appreciated. If I decide to do this I will post pics of the progress.

You have the Monster boards from XXXModRods? They look similar to the better boards which makes me shy away from them. I wanted to go to something tubular which would allow no snow to gather.

are yours raw steel rowdy? if so see about them getting them powder coated. really helps with shedding the snow, it doesn't stick to the coating nearly as good as it will to the raw metal

but if you do want to attempt to make some new boards, a welder at site said you should be able to use a TIG or a MIG as long as you are using the right wire. He says it shouldn't be to much harder to weld then steel, but he has never done it.

see if you can fit these up on your rev :D

Skinz Protective Gear

Skinz is a really great product, however I was hoping for ones that don't taper off at the end and have a consistent width. But if I can't mock up my own I will be purchasing these as they are some of the best product out there.

That makes sense now that you say it for the powder coating.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to see about making this up just cause it'd give me something to do this summer! :) Well...other than house stuff. :D

Yeah I am constantly and shoveling my running boards out. And this weekend I know a guy that broke his femur in 2 places because his foot slipped off his running board while he hit a cross ditch...ouch

I really like the look of these

If i did mine again i would go with these, they are wider than stock powdercoated and no snow be building up on those, these have more holes than mine and even mine don't build up on the XRS.

Might need to put a pair of these on the XP.

They make a set that follows the original running board dimensions too which are cheaper.

Like these ones?

Don't build them out of Chromoly, use aluminum. You are welcome to come see these ones or PM me an email and I can send more pics.

I wouldn't recommend cromo. You should tig it and heat treat it after welding or it's very brittle. Much easier and lighter to just use aluminum.

Rowdy we are Skinz dealers. What kind of sled do you have and year? I can check on availability for you. Powder coated is definitely the way you want to go. Even though Skinz does sell them in aluminum we have yet to sell a set we have sold a ton of the black powder coated ones though.
