So my friend just bought a 850 on kijiji and the bulk head has a crack in it. There is a brace kit installed, not sure if it was installed before or after it cracked.
Anyway, if the crack was to be welded and with the brace kit installed would this a good fix or is he screwed?

Have a picture of the crack? Welding cast aluminum isn't easy, but if you have someone who can, it might be possible to fix it.

that is a common place for them to crack. Could try to weld it, might hold up.

Fill weld , grind smooth then a piece 1/2" on each side of original cracked and weld patch in place.

Tough to make hold but layered may work.
Welding shop may have more ideas.
Bit of labor to change bulkhead out.

Rather uncommon after brace is in.

Probably put the brace kit on after it cracked.

Rideable? Would it have more flex with that crack? Probably not good for clutch alignment?

That is what I was thinking.
So I’m getting this right, the brace kit is more of a preventative thing than a fix?

That is correct. The best preventative thing is to ride careful in early season avoiding rocks and stumps. We heard that even hitting the rocks on the trail on the way up were breaking some of the bulkheads. Fake news or not, I don't know.

Also, it helps to know the area very well (like where the hazards are).

Yeah it's not a fix. could ride it like that, might cause issues though.

Maybe put the brace on it and see how long it lasts. Me personally id rather do that and see how long it lasts, than change out the module.

Not to be a dick but I’m not even a doo guy and I know the first thing to check on those fragile belt blowers is the bulkhead, the guy who sold it was like “ I can’t believe I just nailed that sale lol, and they told me it was wrote off ” sell ice to an Eskimo that guy

That sucks I feel you bought an old powder special many years ago ended up having a cracked bulk head on it. Ended up having a guy weld it and plate it with rivets. Seemed to work but these are 2 different machines. What ever happened to good old fashion honesty. Good luck with repair.

Ride it like you stole it. Make sure it is insured and if something else happens be thankful you are covered. :)
