CNP Snow Conditions & my Apology!

Many are asking what the snow is like down south?

Well after driving through the pass late last week and not seeing much for snow along the highway, I made this post and have done so prematurely! I say that as I have come to learn that the valley bottom is much different than what is reported in and around Atlas where there is supposed to be a good base with something like 10" of fresh fluff falling last weekend.

I'd like to offer my apology for the title comment I posted to this thread and for commenting that the snow conditions are weak! After hearing from others, I have come to learn that this is not the case and I made a poor call based on the road conditions in the pass (my bad). I will be headed down for the Jamboree this weekend and look forward to exploring the area and it's trails. Thanks for the updates and pictures from Polarice, and for clarifying the actual snow conditions for me.

90 % of the time thats what it looks like from the hiway. Ive been riding down there since 95 and if you go by what the hiway looks like you would turn around.

exactly what I was going to say team dirt!! LOL Lots of times we pull into Coleman/Blairmore and it is raining...well it usually just brings a smile to our face

Four or five of us going to the Jamboree, we were planning on riding somewhere in the hills there on Friday, the rally Saturday and Fernie or something higher on Sunday(depending on how much fun the banquet is). None of us have ridden out there before although we all ride in the mountains. Staying at the Goat Mountain Getaway.

I edited my original post as I didn't intend to cast something negative, just that there isn't much snow down low. As I also mentioned, there isn't much at the Morrissey staging area for snow and the warmer weather will make it worse if it doesn't dump some snow real soon.

Was hoping to stage from the Crowsnest Mountain Resort next weekend, but without anything fresh that simply won't happen as the ditches are dry. Might have to camp at Atlas as long as it decent there? Time for the snow dance!

Last year we rode down at the CNP around this same time. There was no snow in Coleman/Blairmore but when we got to Atlas staging area, there was lots of snow and the ride was great.

i get a kick out of the guys that say there is no snow in the crowsnest pass just by gauging whats in town ya go up the atlas road it is thin till past the y and then it starts getting good

if ya spend the time there to look around you can find lots of snow ...
in window mountain friday afternoon 10 inches of fresh went back in sat morning still lots of fresh to be marked up went further north towards the cabin didnt get as much fresh there but still some fresh nonetheless .. further north (no grooming done up there) lots of snow to be had

and yes do travel through black diamond most times down and back

I don't consider it to be lots of snow unless it's 18-20 inch plus of fresh on a soft base.

It's all good. I just find reports of "tonnes of snow" misleading when there is only 6".

well if you have ever been into window mountain the way the wind blows through there for 8 inches to be sitting around is good and if ya went into the trees where you could find five foot deep stuff

I'm not saying that isn't the case, but I'm saying some people (not you in particular) report massive amounts of snow and report new snow in the cm's. People think it'll be awesome there and show up and there is next to nothing becaues they have similar train of thought to me.

Each person has a different perspective, but in the mountains, a few inches isn't great snow

The days I think there is GREAT snow is when you can boondock all day through open fields and treed areas and not have to go hunt down little pockets of fresh that people haven't run over a million times before. Call me a snow snob, but those are the days I hunt for. Fresh tracks and face shots.

i hear ya but the way the snow conditions have been this year when we do get any fresh its good
dont get me wrong id be more than happy to spend more time digging out this year but unfortunatly that hasnt happened in very many spots this year
just got to be a little more explorative and find that deep stuff that no one has tracked up yet

And this is when we get into the debate of "hidden spots" vs common knowledge for everybody on the internet.

IMO, some spots require being kept quiet. Hidden gems that can be depended on are rare. This sport is becoming overly busy in the back country. On top of this is safety concern for "back" back country.

And this is when we get into the debate of "hidden spots" vs common knowledge for everybody on the internet.

IMO, some spots require being kept quiet. Hidden gems that can be depended on are rare. This sport is becoming overly busy in the back country. On top of this is safety concern for "back" back country.

i went back a week later with saw to get rid of that just to see what was behind there ... well guess what not much went up about 3/4 mile and then into a whole lot of tree stumps

These are some pictures we took from our trip out last week. For these we staged at the Sartoris road staging area and rode down to the shelter.







This last picture was taken near the basins to the NW of the shelter. Every where else looked like the pictures above with the snow even worse the further south you got.

Both sides of the Valley have been groomed very nice for the Jamboree. Joe has done a great job and will be out and about for the next few days.

They are trucking in Snow for the drags on saturday as their is no snow at that site.

Yup if you know where to go you can find a few nice pockets for sure in the area as Polarice says, definately more on the North side.

I was in Lost on Sunday and their was a nice 6-8 inches to play in in the trees. BUT I have not seen that many rocks in a long time for this time of the year. But getting their was horrifying ( Unless you stayed on the groomed trails) The south facing slopes on each valley are pretty bare.


Corbin area definately has a lot more snow 6-8 feet in the rolling hills trees and has been fun for sure.

We need snow for sure or their won't be any camping this summer as it is dry back their and the creeks and Rivers are as low as I have seen in years.
