clutch cleaning ?

i just purchased a used secondary clutch for my 800 mountain cat


the belt surfaces have alot of the milky powdery dirt on them
that aluminum gets when it lays for a while


whats the best stuff to get it clean ?
dont really wanna use sandpaper do i ?

I usually use brake clean on the clutch sheaves. It leaves no residue and cleans everything up nice.

Everything I have read on clutch cleaning recommends not using any cleaners.These chemicals get into the porous aluminum.Use steelwool or very fine sandpaper.I am also in the habit of taking compressed air to my clutches after every ride,I have never had a clutch problem and my sleds see alot of use.

3M scotch brite. works great and isnt harsh like sandpaper, just lightly to take off the belt dust and wipe clean with isopropyl alcohol.

Brakeclean is fine as long as you dont get any on the inside of the sheaves of on the belt. As said above use scotchbrite to get a nice crosshatch on your sheaves.

Cleaners that leave no residue are fine. People clean their clutches spotless, but don't bother to clean their belt which has a ton of oil and mould release agents on it from the manufacturing process, then when the clutch slips they blame it on the cleaner .........gotta clean the belt too.

I use acetone and scotchbrite pad..... Takes all the marks off, then rinse with soapy warm water and wipe then blowdry............ Acetone leaves no residues, and cleans off with water. You can get acetone at napa or bumper to bumper or canadian tire, and it's very cheap

Acetone vs Alcohol? Whats better...

I have tons of alcohol from work always available...we use it for cleaning poly pipe...

Should work the same as acid-tone .. scotch pad ,make sure you use a grey pad as the red is equal to 320 sand paper.. to harsh... gray works good. Use gloves, it'll help your throttle thumb work better.

I use the green scotch pad. Thorough cleaning with soap and water and blow dry. Don't forget to wash your new belts in soapy water before you put them on your sled.
