Radio says Edmonton Police have started a blitz on peeps throwing out their smoke butts. It's considered litter and costs the person $250.00.

Also City is working on a plan that will not allow you to light up on any city parks or recreation properties. That means while cooking your hotdog at the appropriate park you can't have a smoke.

Smokers Beware....this is crazy, smokers are people too.

It's not crazy I'm sick and tired of seeing people toss butts like they think a magic fairy just comes and cleans them up.

Your right about that but this "no smoking in parks" is a but much mr thinks and I don't smoke.
Butts strewn all over the streets in front if buildings....just wrong.

It is a tough one. The butt problem is easy if the smokers would realize it. Sort of like the OHV recreationalists busting up the land.

The other part of the right to smoke is a huge issue. Before it is settled, I would hope that some common sense would prevail. Then again, we know what has happened to common sense these days.

Obituary of Common Sense !
Today, we mourn the passing of an old friend by the name of Common Sense.
Common Sense lived a long life, but died from heart failure at the brink of the Millennium. No one really knows how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools; hospitals, homes, factories and offices, helping folks get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness.
For decades, petty rules, silly laws and frivolous lawsuits held no power over Common Sense. He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come in from rain, the early bird gets the worm and life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn), reliable parenting strategies (the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it's okay to come in second.
A veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the Technological Revolution, Common Sense survived cultural and educational trends including feminism, body piercing, whole language and new math.
But his health declined when he became infected with the "if-it-only-helps-one-person-it's-worth-it" virus. In recent decades, his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing federal legislation.
He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers and enlightened auditors. His health rapidly deteriorated when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies; when reports were heard of six year old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; when a teen was suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch; when a teacher was fired for reprimanding an unruly student. It declined even further when schools had to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student but couldn't inform the parent when a female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.
Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.
As the end neared, Common Sense drifted in and out of logic but was kept informed of developments, regarding questionable regulations for asbestos, low-flow toilets, smart guns, the nurturing of Prohibition Laws and mandatory air bags.
Finally, when told that the homeowners association restricted exterior furniture only to that which enhanced property values, he breathed his last.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son Reason. His three stepbrothers survive him: Rights, Tolerance and Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

I'm good with no smoking in public places. If I want to have a picnic I don't want to breathe smoke cause the next guy over decided to light up. A lot of smokers are good but like anything there are some douches that feel the need to light up in a group of people.

It's the automotive manufacturers that have helped create this problem, new cars don't come with ashtrays.

most people have a coffee cup in their vehicle, leave a skiff of coffee in the bottom and toss them butts in there...problem solved !!!

I would rather a bum pick my butt off the ground and reroll it than have them constantly asking me for smokes. Tossing butts is just fine as long as you don't smoke them down to the filter. :)

out here in the country tossing butts out the window of a vehicle can cause grass fires in the ditches. Don't no one tell me it can't happen because I've seen it happen on more that one occasion.

BS smokers have been tossing butts out windows since they invented windows, and they are still options when you buy the vehicle new, but even smokers recognize negative effects on the resale value of a vehicle that smells of smoke and has a stained ash tray.....and they don’t have to clean them out of the vehicle

I smoke but wouldn't it be easier to stop selling cigarets all together. It seems pointless in selling cigarets but one day only being able to smoke in your house. Maybe not even in your yard just incase next door might get cancer.

My favourite is the guy that tries to flick his butt up in the air so it lands on your vehicle. Someone tried this on me last year and a couple of years ago we had a big stogie bounce off our hood.
I wouldn't pick a fight with a smoker. They are tough! They stand outside in minus 30 with a light sweater or sometimes without. They drive around in minus 30 with their windows rolled down. At a 110, the wind chill is ridiculous. You don't want to be the poor bastard that happens to be riding in the back seat on those trips. :)

The non-smoking bylaw in Calgary is being looked at but I think it is only within a certain distance of kids, playgrounds and such.

This is my two cents

I don't throw butts out the window I usually have a beer can or something

But if I am in a park or whatever. I would notice where the smoke is going to and move if I had to ( then again,I wouldn't be that close to someone anyway)
But I can't see how they will ban smoking outside. That's retarded

How crowded is the campsite you are at if the smoke bothers you from the next guy over??? I don't smoke but that sounds a little extreme.....

They sould crack down on old crappy cars/trucks that billow smoke out of the tailpipe, and trucks that every time the pedal is touched black smoke pours out. Thats more offensive than a little woft of cigarette smoke in a park.

I've just reading about cigarette smoke and 1-2 m away from a smoker the cigarette smoke has diluted 75% out doors. And they say 7m away from a smoker and there would be no chance of any inhalation of smoke.
