chicken question

We have laying hens... the kids raised some of them from little wee babies.... another group of hens we purchased from someone else..


Some of the hens have bleeding legs and feet. Is this from them being too dry or are they getting the crap beat out of them by a rooster?

We have one nice rooster, the other 2 are kind of crap heads.

The kids brought the chickens in the house and we made a little chicken hospital in a dog cage... Disinfected their legs and stopped the bleeding.... What do you figure?

Ya chickens are weird that way. Years ago when I was kid we painted one of our barns. Some how a few of our chicken got red paint on their feathers, the next morning everyone of them chickens were beat to Death they don't like the odd ball that's for sure...humans are the same... Just look at our poor odd ball Joey. The kid gets jumped on by everyone. :d

its not the oddball its the fact it was red chickens are attracted to red .... ever see the display at the fair with the chicken that plays x and o's by hitting the light that turns red

we have 14 hens in the group kjb. That would make sense.. We have one awesome rooster who is kind and gentle... the other guys are mean .. pecky..

im thinkin too much testosterone in there. we have a young guy in our church that has a bunch of layers i think he has around 15-20 now all with only 1 rooster laying aprox 1.5-2 dozen a day.

You're gonna want to run about 10:1 hens to roosters if you are trying to get hatching eggs.

The term "pecking order" is in play here...literally!

sorry to highjack your thread here but just to give you a heads up that my friend had 25 hens and one rooster. he was trying to teach his 3 daughters some responsibility and at the same time make some money selling the eggs. Anyway, his insurance company found out and cancelled his home insurance despite the chicken coop being 100 ft away. They said they could not assume legal liability in case someone gets sick from eating the eggs (they had issue with salmonella). There is insurance for that but it costs $1200/year.
