had a guy borrow a lawnboy mower, and cut his lawn, used regular gas sans oil. couldn't undertand why you had to mix oil with gas. who'd a thunk it

I loaned my chain saw to a buddy of mine last year.... said he was just trimming some branches around the yard. Got the saw back.... the bar was a hue of blues, greens and purples. The chain was black and completely burned up. I asked him what the heck he did to it? He was cutting railway ties, never even knew it used bar oil??????? This is why i hate loaning my tools. Cost about 70.00 to replace the burned up chit!

ouch! I usually just point my bar at a stump or whatev rev er out and make sure its throwing enough chain oil out

Nope ... he never ponyed up. Didnt even realize what he had done?? Sounds crazy but as you know not everyone out there understands the common sence stuff when it comes to this sort of thing. Just us dumb ass motor heads!

I'm not great at sharpening, so we put a carbide tip chain on mine.. only downside is either you buy the diamond tip dremmel fitting to sharpen it or you have to bring it in. I'm glad I work there. Grant has the skill to whip it right back into shape... plus side it stays super sharp for a long time.. even when I whoops and cut crap I shouldn't .

Buck an inch for chain, not the carbide tip that one is more. Pretty reasonable.

what oil is good to use, burnt up another chain. been using old motor oil may not be sticky enough.

stretched and hot. may have forgot to file the rakers. oops.

friggin A. you sir are a genious. but not quite what the wife is tellin me. hehe. she thinks it needs to be done now. i tried to tell her the trees where growing for 60yrs or so what's another month. so i had to cut it yesterday. honey has no funny. tree got cut and then i had a few hehe.

I run husky or stihl chain oil myself. Just make sure that in the dead of winter you drain the heavy summer oil out and put winter stuff in though. I failed to do so and took the drive gear for the oil pump out. I run a 28" bar with a skip tooth chain which is about 300 bucks, so I can't afford to burn it up using cheap or wrong oils.

like the commercial said pay me know or really pay me later. tryin to save a couple bucks on chain oil, is pointless when it is going to cost ya that kind of money.

lately i don't think we use more than a gallon or two of oil anyway, so 10-15 bucks is chump change. gotta find a use for old used oil i guess.

Sounds pricey, last chain I bought was skip tooth Stihl and it was about $30.

Imdoo'n. I must say this is the most intelligent thread that you have started and you have actually listened to and appreciated the responses (or so it appears so far)! It is about friggin' time young fellow!

Chain oil is for chains and it works; summer and winter. The viscosity is the big difference in the two. As you can imagine cutting at -20 is different than cutting at +20 or 30. Also, one has to be aware of what and where one is cutting.
If you are in the dirt or a rock here or there, the chain needs touched up with the file. The best oil in the world won't help a dull chain. Take a look at the chips; they should be "chips" and not "sawdust". Firewood gathers will/should sharpen or touch-up their chains with
every fill-up as they are working close to the dirt. The shiny spots on the chain need to be filed away. Angles are important and there are two to be taken into account (that is another discussion).

I have used a saw every year for the last 35 years and I still have little tricks to learn. I got the chance to work with a faller for 5 days when we cleared the Rolling Hills trail and that was awesome. All the little tricks of the trade; now if I could only remember them!!!

Either one of those places on your avatar are popular camping places. Why go anywhere? It is sort of like living in the mountains; not a real need to go anywhere when the weekend crowds are crowds.....just saying!

and no oil when cutting holes for ice fishing. Clear oil for exposed log work as the red stains the logs.
