hey guys I turned 26 today and over the last few months I have been thinking about going to school or getting into a career. When I was 18 I went out to fort mac and worked construction in the oil sands for 5 years. 3 years ago I got into underground mining around home (flin flon,mb). Recently I have been looking to make a change, move out west, or go to school. I don't have any debt holding me back as I recently sold my house in preparation to move somewhere, so I have options. What are some courses or schooling you have taken that is a no brainer and creates a good living for you and a family eventually. I am used to money already so I would like something that produces a good income of course :) DISCUSS!!

what type of courses would a guy take to get into management type jobs, I also have always had an interest in the safety aspect of things and could see myself working in that field

Safety would be a good bet, get all your safety courses under your belt, and then you can either teach or get a job anywhere you want really...safety seems to be taking over every aspect of any field. If you do go into safety, I would go into a field where you have real life experience in, too many book learned safety guys out there with no real life experience, and they come up with some fairly unique ideas at times.
My .02 anyways. :)

You don't need any courses for this in alberta. You need to have lost your licence for DUI; expense more alcohol then anyone else in the company; demolish at least one company vehicle; achieve a grade ten education, and be able to talk loud and consistently. If you can do these things, you are ready for a management position. Don't even think about a safety position until you have a life changing work related story to share with everyone.

1) Go west, work every moment possible
2) Live like a hobo, save every penny.
3) Buy a motorcycle.
4) Point motorcycle south.
5) Drive around S.America until you have no money.
6) Got back to step one.

Might not be my first career choice but looks to me like it might be my new mid life crisis plan:cool:

Go to NAIT and take instrumentation technology program, I took it and have never been out of work in 17 years or I would go to U of A and become a engineer. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Pick a trade and run with it! My siblings with their university degree can't touch me... Or the old man for that matter who became self employed in his trade at about 35. Too many kids with degrees these days and no one wants to work. Just my .02... Management in a trade pays well also but you'd better know your **** or the guys won't respect you

Engineer if you can handle the schooling, Safety Officer as long as you have a good amount of practical experience and the "power" doesn't go to your head. Construction Management is not worth going to school for. If you show drive and intelligence in Alberta you will make your way up the ladder in no time.

Power engineer and move to regina and get on at the co-op. Take home $5000 a month and a pension. You do nothing but sleep and do your gauge checks once in a while. You can study too and take your third class and go anywhere, and then get your second class and you can just laugh in piles of money. I guess a 2nd class guy at the coop takes home $7400 every two weeks.

Get turned down for management position recently? LOL! You know when I owned my trucking company there were 20 bitchers like you to the one guy who could actually manage something and had the balls to do so.! Until your ready for a position where everyone thinks your decisions are wrong, everyone thinks they can do a better job than you but go home with no Stress when its quitting time, and be able to take **** from every employee and let it roll off your back then Don't even think of management. Guys like you (CJR) are needed in a company as workers. Guys like you (CJR) companies usually shuffle to the bottom of the totem pole because of the whining and bitching.

Bingo. Thanks to big company HR "requirements" we hire on 8 to 12 university grads every year....90% are gone (after costing the company $55k in additional training) within 1 year. I try to get consultants on as many of my projects as possible.

The actual cost to the company on turn over is 1.5 x salary when you factor total loss to the company.

And I agree the requirements have gone silly, which opens the door to this new "entitlement generation".

I know people like to bash unions but I had to prove myself for over a year to become a member of mine... They're not all bad and having to prove yourself for that long sure takes away any "entitlement". I definitely feel as though I had to earn my spot and thus respect it that much more.

Doesn't hurt that I've experienced gold prospecting and shovelling gravel for a landscape Company, you do a few ****ty jobs and I tell ya your outlook sure changes! Should be a prerequisite to any good paying job IMO.

Pull the carrot out of you a** and devolop a sense of humor. You can always count on a negative reaction from someone on here when post post a joke.
