We have been testing a capacitor in place of a battery. The capacitor starts a 2012 Etec 800, 3 times before it needs charging from the lighting coil. We use a 50 Watt resistor to protect the lighting coil from overloading while charging the capacitor. This resistor slows the charging to nearly 20 minutes at idle for a completely drained capacitor but that condition will never likely happen. Early testing on the 2015 Polaris RMK 800 shows it will start at least 2 times in a row too but I am not sure if the capacitor was completely charged.
The packaging for this capacitor is similar to a 1/2 size battery. It also only weighs near 2.5 lbs with its aluminum case while the Ski-doo battery weighs closer to 15 lbs. The manufacturer claims 500,000 cycles in DC applications. I figure it will far outlast any sled. Looking at a long term test now to see how long it will hold the charge with no load.

Hey that's pretty cool. What kind of price point are you looking at?

About $200 CDN landed but I am trying to work with the manufacturer for some customization to make more sled friendly and volume discounts to save on freight. One might increase the price while the other decreases price. My point of sharing is to see what kind of response I get to see how much more work I should put into this project. Some will bock at the price but for that kind of weight savings and lifespan it really may be worth it to some.

Very interested as well for 18 mountain cat, are you gonna test it on the cats? price sounds very reasonable

Well that's comparable to the cost of a replacement battery isn't It?

I don't have a Cat to test with but I expect very similar results. I will look for a Cat to try on if I get to a point that I can offer these to my customers.

BS, this technology has been around for a long time. BRP did not invent it and myself and others had been looking into this or testing before BRP came to market.

So it weighs just about the same as a earth x lithium ion replacement battery for a stock battery

And that battery has way more power to be used

Dunno about the rest of ya other than price point ( this capacitor being cheaper than a earth battery) I'd still like to have the most power cause you never know ( g.p.s, lead dog light) are wired in battery live...

My Earth- X battery lasted 18 months. Waste of money.

It would add weight but could you pot the entire enclosure?

We used foam potting compound on ours but when it expands it can pop the case if not done correctly. I almost wrecked it. The Potting compound you speak of is expensive and heavy.
