I was just reading the union demands. Pay for all hours work, sounds fair nobody wants to work for free. Double time for 6th and 7th days in a row. Bloody should be overtime for more than 5 days work on a 5x2 shift. all straight time to 8 hours pensionable hours, No brainer on that one. post retirement benefits, I wish I had that. No contracting out. Great one to fight for. There is more but these were the strong ones. I think they should fight for these. I know I would. I wonder what the top brass makes????. BTW I will never ever cross a picket line no matter what.

What’s wrong with getting the same as the rest of the non union country as per the labour laws for OT? Anything over 44hrs in a week you get OT. If you work 4hrs a day for 8 days that’s 32 hours. Also known as part time for most of the country. I don’t think that should qualify just because you pass out letters.

I worked 8hrs a day 10days in a row with 4 off at one place. No OT paid. That’s a legal work shift.

This country is just not a non union country. i got double time for every minute of overtime and at every contract the company wanted to take it back and tried hard for it.My understanding its a 40 hour week and anything over 8 hours per day on a 5x2 shift needs to be overtime. don't get me wrong I also realize that unions have bad points too.

I know it’s not. I worked 90% of my life non union. And I’ve never gotten double time for just 1hr of ot worked ever even union.

There’s a difference between what someone is entitled to and what they would like. Sometimes sacrifices need to be made from both sides to protect the bottom line. In this case, I don’t feel Can P employees are being fully reasonable in all of their demands. They are struggling financially and if it gets too bad guess who suffers-you and I, not just the employees.

It’s always interesting to note that nobody ever has anything to say about public sector jobs or unions until they want to renegotiate the contracts. Nobody ever says that they’re gonna go try to get a government job, says they want to be a postie or any other government worker bee. The way everyone complains about how overpaid and underworked government workers are you’d think everyone would want their job.
The truth is that most government jobs suck and most people don’t want to do them. Stop and think about which government jobs you would want to do. When times are good, public sector pay is usually below the provincial averages. It’s only when things slow down and everyone is laying off, or cutting hours and wages does government pay and work look attractive. People that decide to take a government job lots of times trade job security and a pension over the better pay and benefits that private sector jobs offer.
And for the people that complain that they don’t get a pension or benefits where they work, that’s your choice. There’s lots of private sector jobs that offer both, quit complaining and go get a better job. If you’ve pigeonholed yourself into some crappy job and are in a rut you can’t get out of, don’t blame anybody but yourself.
I worked construction right out of high school and got my electrical ticket. I realized that I didn’t want to suffer through the ups and downs of that so I went back to school, got a technical diploma and never looked back, always had a good paying job and got paid well to work all over the world.
Life is what YOU make of it. Nobody is gonna do it for you.

well said, the sad thing is most of the complainers and cry babies on here make well over the wage most can workers get. Plus let's see what one would take a pay cut Union or non, I have never worked for unions and never would. But believe me I have been on many jobs with other trades that are Union and are the worst complainers there are, but diff are they make twice what can post workers get. Yes some stuff they [union] wants is lots, but they ask for that to get half. No diff then most of you sell things high knowing you will take lower, really guys when was last time you supported the workers, like send a card or a letter, exactly now they strike and you bitch......yes my wife loves to go picket for 200 bucks a week before Christmas . How many of you would go against your wife and tell her get back to work my buddies are pist.....really and there are way bigger problems in Canada then this.

What does Canada Post pay?

They pay pretty good, especially full time letter carriers and the benefits and pension is awesome.

I wonder if Canada post employees receive their pay check by mail?

How much is pretty good? Everyone always says the pension is “awesome”. Remember that any registered pension in Canada can only by tax law be contributed by any party to at a maximum of 18.5% of gross pay to a certain maximum salary ( I think it’s about $150k but not sure). So no matter who you are or what you make your pension only gets so “awesome”. That’s why executives always get stock options as bonuses because their pension has limits just like ours do. And benefits are cost split with the employer, like most are in the private sector. Dig into the facts and the truth isn’t quite as cushy as some think.

What makes a union electrician better paid than a non-union paid electrician. Tell me. I’ll wait. A union protects the weak. It always has and it always will. I’ve worked both so I feel that i can voice my opinion. It’s still electrical work. I have no sympathy here. Nor will I. So because your “canada post” you can strike when your upset or unhappy. That’s cute. Get outta here. I’d send a hurt feelings report to ya but it’s not gonna get there till maybe January cause your fighting the good union fight. Your like a fax machine. Your days are numbered.

I was out on strike in 2011 for 5 weeks (loved every minute of it).I ended up making the most money that year that I ever made up to then. the Company tried to take our pension as well as other things and we said not a chance. Best summer I ever had. Spent the 5 weeks camping with my family and when it was my turn on the picket line i went. The non union people that had to cross the line every day treated us with respect and we treated them the same. Lots of customers respected why we were out and never crossed. There is some very strong opinions for and against unions.

What makes a union electrician better paid is collective bargaining. It’s why union rates are higher than non union. It’s why when things were going good in mcmurray, everyone was taking the union call outs because they paid more. The non union companies had to match if they wanted to keep their guys. If you hate union work so much why did you work union? Wouldn’t have anything to do with better pay would it?
The posties are striking because they can do it to put pressure on their employer at a time of year when it will have the maximum effect. It sucks for the rest of us waiting for parcels, mail etc,but that’s why they’re doing it. They’ve been bargaining for over a year according to the media.
Unfortunately unions do sometimes protect the lazy and incompetent. They’re legally required to under labour laws. Employers can bargain for just cause dismissal language in the contracts if they want.

Somewhere back a few posts the comment came up that a non union company came in and contracted some work for what was normally was taken care of by union workers. The job was done in the same fashion and The company charge full rate and even went as far as saying if he charged more it would be a crime. On the other side the union said they can’t compete with this and cost would be much higher.
My question is why? Perhaps I already know the answer but have a question for you...where the Fock dose the money come from when unions cost twice as much and are half as productive.
its all fun and games till the well runs dry. Like shiny pony, keep taxing and taking till there’s nothing left. Going to be real fun when the music stops and there isn’t enough chairs.

Canada post rejected another settlement. Well no Chit. They would have to be mentally ill not to. They know that sooner or later the government is going to step in. And we all know that OUR government loves to hand out money they don’t have and that’s not there’s.

Yes I make a lot more, because I hustle and earn it. I don’t force anyone to pay me that much. I have to bid jobs competitively or I will have no work. Yea I probably make 6-8 times more then the postal workers, but guess what? It’s a free country they are more then welcome to come do what I do.
