So you are saying Unions are no good but labour laws need a rewrite?

So if labour laws are also lacking then isn’t it beneficial to have a collective agreement that is beneficial for all the employees?

I think your distaste for unions even though you have felt no hardship because of a union other than someone may or may not have worked as hard as you at some point which is the case in all work places regardless of the public or unionized environment has just given you something to argue about.

Nothing has changed in your examples either. Management isn’t willing to actually build a case on the bad employee. I have been on that management end time and time again. It may take sometimes years of constant documentation and corrective action but I enjoyed sending grown men home to tell their families they were stupid and got fired. Most of that comes down to training, most managers or direct supervisors are never trained in how to handle unionized employees where as the union execs and stewards are at least given the basics. I have seen HR reps, directors and VP’s break down in meetings and leave because they didn’t want to deal with the union reps.

You just don’t want to believe that it is a failure of the management system that allows the majority of dead weight union members to keep their jobs. You are also butt hurt because you feel it’s money coming out of your pocket to provide a quality of living to Postal workings that you do not believe they are entitled to fight for.

You should likely stop paying taxes all together as everything and just about everyone around you is doing just what you are arguing against. Government funded Police, Fire, Nurses and other health care providers, City workers, educators, and then private organizations with Pilots and the guys who load bags on your planes when you take off for fancy trips, and of course skilled labourers and trades making sure your heat is on, your internet works, your vehicles are new and shiny, your fridge is full of beer and so on. Lol

Yep , that's what I want my managers spending their time on , hours and hours spent on getting rid of a crappy employee. But you actually sound like you enjoyed that part, especially enjoyable was sending home a guy to wreck his family's future,. Says a lot , about you , not unions.

I am butt hurt because the union caused me to lose US$22,000.00 because of their selfish strikes! I personally don't care if a union exists or doesn't exists but I do have an issue when they make their problem mine by causing headaches, stress and loss of my income. Total BS. Sorry!

The posties and the federal government unions give the rest of the unions a bad name.

but they all go on strike for their personal gain and inconvenience the public/business unfortunately.

Most unions aren’t in the position to inconvenience the public. Any emergency service unions and nurses can’t strike. Most private sector unions manage to settle without striking. It’s typically CUPW and PSAC that cause the pain in the a$$ for the general public.

I've been on both sides of the fence and what I saw unions do the most was protect the people that most employers wouldn't want working for them. As far as I'm concerned the labor laws and health and safety which the unions of the past had a big part in getting created should be all you need to get a fair pay and safe place to work. If you don't like it, then do what "lilduke" says and find something else to do.

It should never takes years to get rid of someone but probably did because he had the union backing him. I have terminated a few employees over the years and no matter how much they screwed up or I just disliked them I "never" enjoyed thinking about how he was going to tell his family that he lost his job. Anyone who enjoys that has their own issues.

It doesn’t hurt my feelings any.

Years to document a non-performing employee to get any action? Say 10-15% fall below the acceptable threshold you're using up too much of a manager's time to deal with problem employees. A manager may have time to deal with the 1-3% of the worst but there will still be a bunch that aren't quite bad enough to warrant that much attention that skid on through. Unions have their place but the time has come to be more collaborative with employers rather than adversarial.

It was in Vancouver that I experienced this. Very pro union environment. Cases like that were few and far between but I am sure one or two of them did reach a two year point where employees would go off on disability when there was action coming and we had to wait until they return then the processed started over.

The problem is when cases go to arbitration it’s the judges who need to be satisfied that the company gave the employees every reasonable chance to improve. That has nothing to do with unions but having representation gave the employee that ability to file grievances. I can link dozens of cases that are dozens upon dozens of pages long of these ridiculous cases.

There are good unions and obviously militant unions that want to screw their own company over. I have worked with both.

I can't believe that, post the posting as no way they would pay that for that position. They say that to get people to apply then say ohhhh your only worth 20 or 25 lol

Lol that’s a good one.

But in your opinion is the termination justified?

Let me guess . You would ask if they were on their coffee or lunch break , right ?? Or if it's written in the employment contract that you specifically can't screw on the bosses desk ??

I just asked your thoughts.

A lot of things happen in the firehouse that are likely termination worthy. I have multiple family members who work in them.

If it was an office environment and two coworkers are getting it on in the copy room, would they get fired or reprimanded and a slap on the wrist? What about a warehouse? I know up North most camps are very much against it but I have been told it still happens.

Two years ago a district Fire Chief in Calgary had a grow op in his home and was charged. They ended up dropping the charges and I believe he holds an even higher position now. While not workplace involved would the reputation of CFD be a concern and a person in safety sensitive be held to a higher standard accused of drug trafficking be a larger concern than two people getting rowdy at work?

Fake news. I looked it up for curiosity as I was going to tell the girlfriend to go apply lol. Their administrative positions are $31/41 hr and they only work 35hrs a week which when you consider most standard work weeks are 40 hours means they are not earning the same top end wage.

Albeit still a fair wage for administration positions.

Fair wage....I am certain no where else but govt position does Admin get up to $41/hr.
There are approx 220,000 govt employees getting paid by collected taxes. There is no private sector entities that can sustain the wages or pensions that govt employees get.
NOBODY ELSE FEELS AS ENTITLED AS A GOVT EMPLOYEE!!!!

That makes about 210,000 govt employees that do not have a grasp on reality and will actually vote for that biotch again to protect there "entitled earnings and protected pensions".
Unions not far behind, and I was a member for 28 years.
Don't believe just check what market share building trades hold.
Dug their own graves with attitudes.
Posties?
Fawk them and their whining.
Sorry - call them as I see them.

Vote for what bitch? Notley? Trudeau? Can’t stand either of them but those wages were here before them. Many of the government CBA’s people operating on are 3-5 years old. Some have been operating on expired CBA’s for 1-2 years.

$41hr admin jobs aren’t everywhere. Those jobs are highly sought after. My girlfriend does payroll, administration, scheduling work and has done so for a number of years. A job like that could easily have 500 maybe higher applicants. Again that’s a job based on 35 hours, they still only start at $31 and it’s a term position so they will likely never see $41. So $56,000 to start a year is hardly an entitled wage. Minimum wage at $15/hr gets people earning almost $30,000. Commercial building cleaners can earn up to $25/hr which is over a normal 1950hr work year about $48,000 so it’s not that hard to fathom.

Many of Alberta’s workforce wages are still living likes it’s the boom, private and public included. As a province we still for the most part have the highest earning middle class. We poll various like industries when looking at bargaining for wage increases and AB as a whole is still largely higher than say BC or Ont. Is that sustainable going forward? Not likely.

It’s funny though some people say screw the greedy Postal Service workers and would be happy to see them out of work then in the same breath say it’s an essential service.

One's a biotch the other a bastards.
Don't want posties out of work but come on NO ONE GETS THE GOLDEN TREATMENT OF A GOVT EMPLOYEE!!!
My wife runs an income tax office for $20 and teaches tax return classes after hours.

$41/35 hrs a week is a dream for a non govt employee.
Cost per hr of service not cost per week. Just scews the actual cost per hr service.

Nobody but nobody gets treated as good as a govt employee on partly my nickel.
And they know it and don't care as long as their status quo does not change.
Don't worry I have friends and family in govt jobs and they not shy to admit it.
Just how it is and no govt has shown any balls for change in many terms.....who would do what's right and endanger 220,000 votes.
Posties should see zero change for at least 4 year term.
Same as EVERY GOVT EMPLOYEE.
That is more than fair when the rest of us get roll backs.
