Can I splice a track?

I have a 162" snowmobile laying around that nobody wants. I was wondering..is it possible to shorten it and splice it. I have an 800 with a 128. Or else I would sell it for $200.

Nope. Won't work. Unless you use lots of duct tape.

I saw a guy splice 2 tracks together using bolts to make a track over 200inches long! Don't know how long it lasted though

Its been done, a guy made a 200+ inch track by splicing 2 together. He put it on a Polaris Pro. I have no idea how to do this though, so good luck

There is a place in Manitoba that repairs or splices them but I don't know the cost or how well it would live.

not a good idea... if you were able to pull it off, It would be unbalanced at best.

Sure, you can do that. It looks like this after 20 years of use. This is a skidoo Elan converted to a very long track by adding in a chunk of another track. Look up commercial conveyor belt splicing. If you think they can’t handle torque imagine a commercial conveyor belt running a couple tons of gravel up and over a conveyor belt that is hundreds of feet long and then ask how much torque that is versus your snowmobile. To change the track you can also just pull the pin and remove it without disassembling the drive cog and axle so that’s pretty convenient.

They make special fastners for repairing broken conveyor belts. Should be able to getter done one way or another

This one has been running for 15-20 years and holds up at Elan top speed without issue. Granted, Elan top speed isn’t much. Think about all the torque applied to those conveyor belts. Some of the longer conveyor belts have 2000-4000 pounds on them going up at a time.
