The new cam for my 1997 sportsman 500 should be coming this weekend. I'm just wondering, whats the procedure for breaking in a new camshaft? how long is the break-in period?

I would say the same as braking in a new engine. On an off the fuel no wide open throttle not much idling. and check the oil frequently, just to make sure every thing is button up properly, double check drain plug. Hope that helps, oh ya this is only for the first tank of fuel, then hammer down.

Seems that most manufacturers recommend 20 minutes of roughly 3500+ rpms, some suggest adjusting the valves after, some dont. Doesn't need a load on it so you could just set the idle and wait, pending it will cool itself.

In automotive use... I've always just set the rpm at 2800 rpm and let it sit there for 15-20 minutes. Drain the oil, adjust valves and go.
