This is one of the things the Harper government is doing right.

The 'Tough on crime' bill, not so much.

Save money in one area, just to piss it away in another.

It is nice too see this but when is this going to take place. From what I understand is that the long registry is still in effect. Don't they have too abolish the registry before they destroy the records. Maybe it is just me.

The bill says that it lg registry will be abolished and all records will be destroyed. When the bill passes all records will be shred, and the Canadian government will pretend the cluster fawk that was long gun registry never happened.

I want to see it gone but it is sad that it cost so much money just to be destroyed. I wish it was coming out of someone elses pockets.

I am not sure what the gain would be now to remove this registry besides strictly a political one. The money has already been spent so might as well use it but fine tune it. The cops have already said it was an extremely useful tool. We have to apply for so many licenses/registrations what makes a gun registration any different? Just my 2 cents worth

I take it you've never bought a gun? If registry was scrapped there is so much less paperwork, and older guns that were never registered become legal.

The cost of the program is $4 million a year. I can think of a lot of better uses for that money than tracking my .22 that I use for killing gophers.

Do you really think a criminal is going to register his gun before he kills someone?

The only license you will need to get a firearm now is a P.A.L. There is no licensing or registration after this.

The program is already incredibly inaccurate. A family friend got pulled over with an old single shot cooey .22 not registered, so the officer took it. Anyways the guy got all the licensing done and went to pick it up, and they handed him a gun that wasn't his. He told them what his was and they said this was the gun that they had in their system that he owned. The gun was worth 5 times what his was but just goes to show what the system is like.

There is no reason to for the government to know what i have for guns.

It is the huge cost to keep it going. In the first 5 years after it was implemented ( back in '95 ) they ran a 320 million dollar deficit, and it has been increasing yearly. Wouldn't those tax dollars be better spent for health care or education programs?

No I have not bought a gun but I do know that I cant scratch my rear end without applying for some sort of license or register something so all I am saying why should guns be any exception. Again, if this is a useful tool for the cops then I am ok with it. If it is inaccurate/expensive then it needs to be revamped but then I would not hold my breath that it will be 100% accurate. Nothing is with the government.
As for criminals, of course they will not register their guns. But having a gun in their position if caught, now changes the whole scenario.
