Ok now to add to this question has anyone shipped in a new sled??? Looks like my sled for this year is coming down from AK any idea on costs for crossing? I just dont want to think I am saving a bunch of coin then find out the border charges 1500 for a sled to cross? Any help would be great!

Shifty

Should only have to pay GST and $209 to transport Canada if you do the paperwork. If a broker does the paperwork it should around $300. No duties on anything manufactured in North America. Yamaha is the only sled builder who manufactures outside North America.

I bought my 2008 Yamaha Griz 700 in Kallispell Montana and saved approx. $2500 after getting it into my driveway. Took about 15 min. at the border to export and import and pay duty and gst. I'm noy sure about sleds but atv's are not exempt from duty if not built in North America. The duty is 6.1% on atv's and I would assume they are similar for sleds.(don't forget that to export the US Customs requires title and other documents to be faxed 72 hours ahead of time)

I have heard that snowmachines are exempt from duty even if they are manufactured outside of NA

Not true. Some manufacturers like toyota, honda, yamaha have plants in NA as well as outside of NA. I know some of Yamahas quad's are built in NA and some are not, so you want to know before you buy.

Yep, it looks like the U.S. is the way to go for new and used stuff for the time being! Thanks for the tips.

I bought 2 2007 Yamaha sleds (RS vector mountains) and a trailer from the US in August. When I crossed the border I thought I would have to pay duty as well as the other taxes but I was wrong. No duty I was told on sleds, doesn't matter where they were built. Mine were built in Japan. Saving was aprox $7500.00 total. Can't beat it!!! A little paper work, no hassel, well worth it.

That said I put a deposit on a US truck yesterday. Will be saving about $12,000.00.

So, where did you find a dealer in the US who would sell a new vehicle to you with a Canadian address? I have heard from a couple of different sources US dealers have some secret agreement with their Canadian counterparts to not deal with us.
Anyhow, we just got back from a trip and saw where we could buy a Dodge 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Diesel for $31,995 or a 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 Hemi for $24,280 in Colorado Springs. Well worth the trip if they will sell it to us. Friend of mine says same thing with Harley Davidson. Canadian address means they won't sell new bike to him. Sounds like there should be a lawsuit over this.

Edit: Or is this a used truck you are buying?

Hey summit889, where did you buy your truck from?? I assume it is used.

Bought it from a dealer in Illinois. It is used, 20,000 miles. kinda cool that i sent him $1000 less in canadian money than the US price.

would you mind saying how much you paid? Im always on the lookout for a new truck :)

$35,000US full load, dvd, sunroof etc. Could have got a brand new one for just under $50,000 US. When you search be sure to check out the company on the BBB website.

Ya, no duty on machines that are designed to travel exclusively on snow is what i had heard.

Did you buy them new or used?

what else are you buying? What was shipping from illinois to sweet grass? Who did you use?

Thanks

Bought my wife an 04 explorer ltd. $12,000 with 24000 miles on it. I used a company called Rite Transportation. They charged $1900 for both delivered to Sweetgrass. The Explorer is coming out of North Carolina so it is quite a distance. around 2500 miles to Sweetgrass. You should be able to get a vehicle delivered from Illinois for 700-900 bucks.
