Buying a sled in US with aftermarket tunnel

What's everyone's experiences with buying a sled in the us bringing into canada with a aftermarket tunnel? Is it even possible?

Needs to have registered vin same as a vehicle....
As long as the new tunnel has original vin put on it can be brought into Canada with all the correct paper work

Or needs to be stated that sled is used for closed course competition only

With the closed course thing it has to be put on by the manufacturer. Ive bought motocross bikes in the states and they qualify for this. But they were VERY sticky that it have that sticker on them.

If they did put a new serial number on it just do a check at the border to make sure it is a "qualifying" 17 digit serial number. Bought a jet boat down in the states one time and they had painted it, lost the serial number tag, so just made up their own serial number and registered it as a home built. Caused a ridiculous amount of headache, and if it wouldnt have been for a couple of connected friends would have had to either crush the trailer, or take it back to the states.

so this is done by? Rivet a plate with the serial number on it? Stamp the tunnel?

You basically need all original manufacturers info that's comes on the factory tunnel.
Recall Clearance letters
Cert of origin
Title
Has to be admissible


It can be done you HAVE to make sure you got all this info before buying the sled

All info you need is on transport Canada and talk to the border crossing agents will help

All the above is accurate of what JP said... I did this last year and when they ran the VIN I was missing ONE recall letter from manufacture... so had to wait for Yamaha USA to fax letter that recall was complete. As for serial # have the current owner (Title) ensure the tunnel is stamped or plate is on tunnel and ... if ya don't US agents will then check engine serial # etc... u will lose your chit!!! Just have all documents ready and approved as per the hour rule and all should be smooth... Another note check sled for uncontrolled substances... when they had the dog do sniff test... a light went on and thought... what could be in that seat trunk!! but all went well. Ha then you get to take to Canadian Tire to get inspection...

We have brought sleds across a few times and a few different ways. Both were highly modified sleds with all stickers etc removed but we did have the required stickers etc attached to papers. As far as titles go, some States are titling States and some are not, you will have to find that out, they require different documentation on the US side for each.

You have to stop at BOTH the US and Canadian side for exportation/importation purposes. Get your documents to the US side as soon as possible. I think the minimum requirement is 72 hours for your documents filled out correctly but if their is an issue and they need to contact you, your 72 hours will start all over. I had my documents there I think 3 weeks ahead of time in case anything went wrong and they needed more or different documents.

The best advise I can give you is call the border that you are crossing at. Call both the US and Canadian side, tell them what you are doing and ask them what you need to do, the US side will also be able to tell you if the State you are exporting from is a titling State or not. Get the info right from the horses mouth. Little things change all the time in the exporting/importing laws and you don't want to get caught up on the little details by listening to us S&M "experts" when a simple phone call will answer all your questions....lol!!! Remember they are paid to answer your questions even though a few of them seem to think they are paid to sit there and do I am not sure what.......

Yes the transport Canada sticker is the key one. Was going to buy a custom last year from Idaho custom tunnel and it had no vin on it and it was up to the seller toget a serial number on the tunnel and apply to transport canada and all the rest at the border which is not bad. Call transport Canada and they will give the info that has to be on the tunnel or bring it in for parts only salvage pretty easy to make it look like that.

absolutley corrct. Your ability to lie is probably about 5/10. Their ability to tell if you are telling a lie is 10/10. It is not a fair fight.

riv.ca has a 1 800 number. Call that number and speak to an agent. They are very knowledgeable and helpfull.
